Hi. My son is a junior and he was accepted to NIH Internship, Wharton LBW and M&T SI, HSHSP at MSU, and University of Connecticut Research Apprentice Program in Medical School finally. He was rejected from Cornell NBTC, Clark Scholar.

My son highly advanced in math and he has two college plans: 1) major in math with dual major in economics (when he applies for most of IVY and MIT) or 2) apply to BS/MD (for Northwestern & Brown)

His past summer schedule was…
After 9th grade: 4-week Lab Assistant in MSU Obesity Research Lab, Played golf in local big gof tournaments
After 10th grade: Participated in 6-week research program in Chemical Engineering Lab in Washington Univ. in St. Louis (awarded several awards with an excellent research paper), Played golf in local big gof tournaments

Among the programs selected, we need to choose only one ASAP!! Please help us…

Id say either NIH or the Conneticuit research program would be best. If he is already advanced in math, getting the breadth of more summer science would be optimal ( at least in my opinion.) MSU seems exaclty like what he’s already done, so I’m not sure if he would want to do it again.

He should enjoy whichever you guys choose, but good luck choosing!

Thanks upw22.
We are likely to decide between NIH and LBW. NIH is very selective and my son can get a valuable experience with receiving salary ($3,400 for 2 months). However, he has to stay in a rental room by himself. In addition, it will take the whole his summer and he can’t play golf at all.
As for Wharton LBW, experiencing UPenn itself is awesome and, if he applies for Wharton in this fall, this can be a good plus. Negative thing is that, since my son has kept researching in math and science area, this may look too diverse in college application.

My son received an e-mail from an investigator working at NIH and had a phone interview in two weeks ago. Then the interviewer said that he would accept him. I think that he might send his acceptance notice to the internship program. After that, we didn’t hear anything from NIH yet, but believe that he was accepted for the summer internship at NIH.
