Which one do colleges give more preference?

Parents with PH.D. or no college education? Do colleges give preference to first generation to go to college?

Colleges definitely prefer you to be first generation. This is not a question on the app, but they will ask the highest education level and occupation of each parent. The thinking is that an super qualified applicant without college educated parents is more a a go-getter than the child of a doctor and lawyer. Downplay the parent occupations. If your father/mother is head of surgery at the local hospital, just say that they are a doctor.

hey thanks for the opinion

or tell the truth?

I’m in a process of adoption. My birth parents have dual Ph. d and the other family have nothing.

I wouldn’t worry about this too much. It isn’t a hook like being a URM. It is more of an minor edge. I assume that your adoptive parents are more important to you and they will be on the finan aid forms. (Who files the FAFSA next year is really more of an issue.) You could fill in the names of your adoptive parents, and then include a note about the adoption and the names of your birth parents in the supplemental info section, but do whatever you are comfortable with.
