i got into Bioengg program at Uconn/Pitt/UMW and also Bioengg at Purdue/Vtech. Not sure which school is better in terms of name brand etc. any help would really be great and any insights on program as well. thanks
Net price and debt at each?
Most of these start engineering students as first year engineering undeclared, and may have secondary admission to major based on college GPA:
(Not sure about UConn; check with its engineering division directly.)
thanks. Net price at Pitt is same as others (even though they are out of state but giving scholarship merit based). So, am confused as to which one is good in terms of if one is better than other ranking/curriculum/ wise and really good college? thanks for the help!
Read and compare programs (even graduate) for Bio Eng.
I know Pitt has pretty good well established one. I know VTech just started BioMedical, so they are probably very small. I have no idea what is UWM or UMW? William and Mery? That is not technical school. Purdue is good technical school and has good BME program too.
What is cost for you Pitt Vs. Purdue. Purdue probably stronger school than Pitt.
Are you from Virginia? I do not know much about UConn.
Are cost equal?
Pittsburgh is better than the others in terms of not having high college GPA hurdles to get into the bioengineering major after enrolling at the school:
Pittsburgh: 2.0
VT: 3.0
Purdue: 3.2
Wisconsin: 3.5 technical, 3.0 overall (even if direct admit, need these GPAs to stay in the major)
Verify that UConn is direct admission to the bioengineering major for you. If not, then it will be competitive to get into the bioengineering major as described at https://undergrad.engr.uconn.edu/prospective-students/admission-guidelines .
You probably want to earn a college GPA of at least 3.0 to avoid getting screened out of interviews for internships and jobs due to GPA, but you do not want possible first year stumbles to force you out of your major early.
thanks. for us, since pitt in state, the cost is less. but given that it’s not as good as UWM or Uconn, i am trying to figure out where to go as Uconn research activity compared to UWM or Pitt is something i am also wanting to get some thoughts/guidance on and also placements. Pitt i am not sure but for Pre-med track if i decide later then its med school seems pretty good though. thanks for all the help.
Pitt is costing me $34k/yr
UWM cost out of state is: $58k/yr
Uconn cost out of state is: $33k/yr
VT cost out of state is: $30k/yr
Now i would have preferred UWM but cost is really expensive and when compared to research opportunities between UWM and Pitt, both seem to be same.
I am kind of favoring Pitt even though my first choice is UWM but cost wise is 100k for 4 years that i’d rather not take extra burden.
Any insights would really be helpful.
thanks
Wisconsin being the most expensive with the highest weed-out GPA seems like the least desirable choice.
Purdue! Boiler Up!
Just a note that bio engineering is typically a non competitive major at Purdue but BME was highly competitive last year. They are two separate majors at Purdue.
Thanks a lot to everyone for the help. This is very helpful. Wisconsin seems expensive compared to others and not too different vs others when considering cost vs reputation/ranking.
UConn seems pretty good as its out of state but offered merit based scholarship. Uconn vs Pitt is now i am kind of thinking given that Wisconsin is too expensive. thanks for all the help!
The real competition is Pitt, VTech, and UConn.
I’d go for VTech, personnally
- in part because UConn’s environment isn’t the best (Storrs) and UConn has nothing that VTech doesn’t have. VTech will be more respected by Engineers/Tech, offers a real, dynamic college town, and is out of state for you.
If you want to stay instate, Pitt is a no-brainer – but I’m of the opinion 18 is a great time to go and try new things, discover new parts of the country, so I’d vote for VTech.
Is there a big difference between the majors?
