Which private college has the best ecology program?

As the title says, which private college has the best ecology program?

As you have probably found, most of these programs will be at large state universities. Cornell is the one private that comes up most often as having the number of students necessary to have the variety within the curriculum.

Some notable schools:
Sewanee: University of the South
Delaware Valley College
Syracuse (the next door location of SUNY ESF is a huge reason why its ecology is so good)
St. Lawrence University
University of Findlay
University of San Diego (marine ecology)

SLU has Environmental Studies & Outdoor Studies, no ecology major.

Many small colleges have land that is dedicated to ecological study. Knox, Carleton, and Austin College are examples.

Knox has a program called Green Oaks Term, where you spend the entire term doing ecological studies. They hold a prairie burn every couple years as part of the prairie restoration project. (Knox’s athletic teams are called the Prairie Fire.)
Carleton has an 880 acre arboretum adjacent to campus that is used for ecological studies.
Austin College has a 100 acre prairie that they are restoring.
College of the Atlantic in Maine has one major: human ecology, with specialties in many other environmentally-skewed areas.

Are you looking for an environmental ecology/biology program or an ecology and evloutionary biology program?

For ecology and evloutionary biology programs, a biology degree from Yale would be about as good as it gets.
[Yale Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology](http://www.eeb.yale.edu/)

Environmentally focused ecology/biology programs are typically best taken at land grants or flagships.
