I have been accepted for two research positions for the summer, and I’m having trouble deciding which one I should choose. I know both will offer great opportunities for research. I also want to know which one would have more weight in the college admissions process.
These are the programs:
*High School Honors Science Program (HSHSP) at Michigan State University: research topics depend (7 weeks long)
https://www.msu.edu/~hshsp/index.htm

*George Washington Carver (GWC) Program at Iowa State University: Molecular studies on stress tolerance in plants (6 weeks long; I would receive a $1500 stipend for the research)
[George Washington Carver Internship Program](http://www.ag.iastate.edu/diversity/gwc/)

Please let me know what you think… I really need some help on this!

The better way to approach this is to see which you would enjoy more and which programs offer the area of research you like to do. I have to think HSHSP offers more breadth in disciplines than just plant based studies in the Iowa state program. If there is an interest match you will not go wrong with either of those for college admissions.

Of course I am leaving the financial side out of the equation for this comparison and if that is a constraint, then you have probably a decision made already for you.

Atleast in terms of prestige and popularity HSHSP is well up there with the Simons, IOWA SSTP, Garcia, Clarks etc. I do not know much about the program you are talking about. So do your home work. Good luck

HSHSP costs $3,200, while GWC gives you a $1,500 stipend. So from a purely financial point of view, GWC seems like a good choice.

HSHSP is definitely more prestigious, but that’s not to say that GWC is a easy camp to get into. I heard that admissions were significantly more competitive this year.

Based on the small number of students, GWC will probably give you more individual time to work on your project, and would be less organized than HSHSP. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

All in all, I agree with parent62 - it depends on what research you want to do and where you want to be this summer. Either program will give you amazing opportunities!

Thanks for the advice!

Let me know what you end up deciding upon :)

I decided to go to HSHSP. :)

Nice… make the best of it :)
