which school is better, Boston University or Boston College?

I have been on the US News rankings, and BC is ranked higher. However, my uncle, a Dean of our local university and a former professor at UC Berkeley and Stanford, as well as my english teacher, a Columbia alum, have both told me that BU is better. I’m pre-law, and I’m undecided about which school to go to.

Well you certainly are not clever. No one cares what your professor from UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Columbia affiliations say about a particular institution. Judging by your rather sorry attempt to implicitly boast BU over BC i would say you are a current BU attendee. Grow up and go study…BC>BU any day every day…your not doing BU a favor with this post by the way

I wouldn’t completely say BC over BU because it really depends on your major/program. For sciences BU beats BC. For history/poli sci BC is better. BU also has a great business/management school.

Sure, BC is ranked higher overall. However, you have to look at each program and major individually.

Did you ask them WHY they thought BU was better?

In my son’s school, BU is a safety school for those accepted at BU. Backing that up with fact, last year 30 kids applied to BU, 12 were accepted and 0 attended. Don’t take it that 18 kids weren’t accepted, it’s just the reality that in a town of approximately 17,000 residents, BU is only going to want so many kids from the same small town. The problem is that the kids BU wants, don’t really want BU, even with more merit money. Meanwhile 26 kids applied to Boston College 8 were accepted and 3 attended.

It’s not just our school. From The Princeton Review, BU accepted 56 percent of their applicants and 22 percent attended. BC accepted 27 percent of applicants from a higher scoring entering class and 29 percent of those attended.

The good news for BU is that talented kids DO apply to BU. They see it as an acceptable alternative if the schools they really want don’t want them. BU accepts a large percentage of their applicants because they are strong students. So, as an example, if a kid’s reach school is Dartmouth, his ‘meets’ school may be BC and his safety school may be BU.

As an aside, rather than going after students that REALLY want to go to BU, BU’s strategy seems targeted at students who need to settle for BU. Naturally this doesn’t mean that many of these students can’t adjust and love the school, but it can lead to many transfers and other problems. I know a girl in our town that would have LOVED to go to BU (it was her first choice) but wasn’t accepted simply because too many better students applied to BU as a safety. This just seems like an unhealthy process to me.

IVYLEAGUEGRAD 2007: I’m in no way implying that BU is better than BC. I’m undecided about which school to attend, and I am in no way attempting to flatter BU. I made this post with the intention of gathering other people’s opinions, hoping that my decision is made easier. If you feel so strongly about BC, than please explain why instead of lacing your post with such a bitter attitude.

Not a bitter attitude I found it odd how you listed so many opinions and then persisted to list educational background which is just not needed and redundant. I guess the manner you presented your original statement didn’t come off as a genuine question. Just as how ctyankee rant is completely unnecessary.

I agree with ivygrad. You posting the educational background of the people who told you BU is better just shows how ignorant and ill informed the professors at some of the best universities in the world can be.

What most students in high school don’t realize is that it all comes down to fit. If you haven’t already visit both schools and choose the one that you feel most comfortable with. Honestly I would be more impressed by a person who received a 4.0 at UMASS than a 3.0 at Harvard. Don’t rely on ranks either both BC and BU will provide you with solid opportunities of getting into top law schools.

BC should stop expanding into Brighton. Nobody in Boston likes drunk and rowdy BC students as next door neighbors anyways.

Ivygrad is calling out the the O.P. has being disingenuous; someone who made up these conversations with others about BU. Wasn’t that clear?

Well, since we’re critiquing posts around here, perhaps simply asking the O.P. whether they genuinely mean something is a better way than calling them out as a “sorry attempt” at being a BU shill. Perhaps the words you are struggling around are “I apologize.”

I think most of us know that we are not solving world hunger here so I don’t think we need to spend time debating what posts are necessary. That said, if I can help some kids (as others have helped me) work through their decision process, I willing to post. I hope that’s okay with you.

This, more or less.

They are also somewhat different environments. BU is a sprawling urban campus integrated with its city surroundings. BC is a suburban school with a more traditional campus all the way at the end of the Green Line. Also, BC is Catholic-affiliated and BU is not.

I’m not stupid. Ivygrad said:

I agreed and said it showed how even professors at the top schools don’t know the academic quality of some of the most famous schools in the country. It is commonly agreed upon that BC is much better than BU.

2009 NCAA Champs
5 championships>3 championships
BU>BC

^Hah, BU certainly rocked hockey this year. Even as a northeastern student who watched the pitiful ending of the NU-BU beanpot, I gotta give them credit.

I think they’re both good schools. For me it would come down to atmosphere. BU is much larger and very urban. Allston’s a really cool place to live, and the location in boston is great but some people do complain about the campus being so sprawled out. BC is much smaller and has a really pretty, more traditional campus. I’m basically just repeating what jessie said above, but I think this really makes the difference. I also agree that BU may be stronger in the sciences whereas BC’s strength is in poli sci and other more liberal artsy majors, at least based on my friends who go there.

Coming from the west, I always thought BC was the “better” school. Now that I have friends at both schools, I really think both have good academics and smart students. Forget prestige, it’s fairly negligible. Pick the school that you think you’ll enjoy most and do best at.

Boston College is better. This is just a small sample of BU’s student body

BrownBear1 is a ■■■■■.

I have 11 posts that hardly qualifies me as a ■■■■■. Just look at what he wrote, how can you not feel sorry for him and laugh at him. Did I hurt your feelings diontechristmas? did you go to BU as well? If so I’m sorry no reason to pout.
