Which school is better for Computer Science, Boston University or Ohio State?

Boston University is ranked #49 in CS while Ohio State is ranked #30 in CS, but I know BU is harder to get into and a better school overall, any thoughts?

How much does each school cost? Do you have other options? Are you in-state for Ohio State?

I would be very surprised if your job opportunities would be significantly different with a CS degree from either BU or Ohio State.

Undergraduate CS programs tend not to be ranked by national publications. If you’ve consulted graduate department rankings, I’d recommend you disregard them.

There won’t be much practical difference in attending either of these programs. Choose based on fit, cost, and perhaps the region you want to work in after graduation.

As mentioned, CS rankings focus on research, not teaching or postgrad outcomes given how few places release such fine-grained detail in stats. And even if it was an undergraduate ranking, 30 vs 49 is not a meaningful difference. I think you may be a bit too rankings focused.

Close, you should in other variables like campus, travel etc to see if either feels better.

In deciding between those two colleges I’d focuss on affordability and fit.

Probably tOSU.

In my opinion neither school is “better” for CS. Both schools will provide a good education. I agree that you should focus on affordability and fit.

Boston University is a super school. It has a global brand. It’s going to be a spectacular option if you can feel comfortable in an urban setting without the traditional campus. OSU is equally great in its own ways. More traditional campus experience. Big diverse student body. Tremendous resources and facilities. Great and talented professorial team. Big time sports rivalries and traditions. But it is a big school and all that can entail in terms of navigating your time there.

I would choose BU but I am biased towards New England schools in a big way.

Best of luck.
