which school is more prestigious?

georgetown or duke?

i think it’s duke. although my parents think duke is prestigious, they are convinced g-town is WAY more prestigious. share your thoughts.

What for? That’s the thing…who is judging?..law school? business? IR? Grad school? Lacrosse? Basketball? The kid who lives down the street? The person reading your window decal in the parking lot?

I always thought of Georgetown as far superior, but I was raised to hate Duke for athletic rivalry reasons, so…

you’re going to get people who fervently argue for one or the other. i mean to be honest i think gtown gets most of its prestige from it’s School of Foreign Service for undergrad… otherwise, based on what i’ve heard from students, on the internet, etc. the rest of the school doesn’t really stand out that much (10 to 1 someone argues for the outstanding prestige of the business school). the med school and law school are fantastic… but i’m assuming that you’re talking undergrad here. i’ve always seen duke as more impressive as far as undergrad goes (it’s grad schools are fantastic as well, obviously). so yeah. my two cents.

Both are very prestigious. I would say that they are equally so.

disagree. duke is way more prestigious.

Duke…

If you end up fortunate enough to decide between the two, and prestige will be the decisive factor, think of them as peers and move on to what’s more important–academics and quality of life.

Duke by a long shot. Even three things being touted for Georgetown (basketball, law school and med school) are all considerably better at Duke. In science, graduate school and endowment, it’s not even a competition. GT’s only highlight is its unique undergrad school of foreign service, but Duke is better in 'most everything else.

Duke, but Georgetown is well known as well.

Yeah, prestige is subjective. They’re both in the same academic class, so don’t go for something shallow like “prestige.” Now, you might want a prestigious program in certain fields, but you didn’t specify.

I think they’re about the same, prestige-wise.

They are both extremely prestigious. I personally don’t think prestige, as measured by most people, isn’t dependent on academic prowess but rather perception, visibility and social clout. Georgetown has produced more heads of state, ambassadors and cabinet members than every Ivy besides Harvard and Yale. When one thinks of politics and IR, Georgetown immediately springs into mind.

Duke, on the other hand, is prestigious primarily because of its top-notch med school (late senator Ted Kennedy got treated there), its Camelot-like basketball program, its powerful Wall Street connections and the fact that its the most well-known school in the southern part of the country.

I think most people consider the top 10 prestigious schools in the country to be Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, Berkeley, Duke, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. Most of the laypeople I’ve talked to in my life seem to specifically mention these schools with high praise.

I didn’t even hear about Dartmouth, Caltech or the University of Chicago until I was a high school senior.

perhaps they were fluffing your ego ole Dukie ;)

I used to think of Gtown as more prestigious until I saw US News, but now I firmly don’t give a ■■■ about laypeople prestige

Honestly, the name “Georgetown” sounds more prestigious to the layperson. But as someone who knows about these schools, I would choose Duke first because Georgetown does not offer my major.

I think people are confusing academic versitality and prestige. Duke is more versitile than Georgetown. Georgetown is more of a niche school, strong in International relations, Business, pre-law and pre-politics/diplomacy. For students interested in those sorts of academic and career tracks, Georgetown is as prestigious as they come. Duke is also strong in those, but it is also very strong in the Natural/Life Sciences and the Humanities. However, in terms of prestige, Georgetown is very prestigious, as is Duke. Which is more prestigious depends on whom you ask of course, but to the majority of people, both would qualify as “prestigious”.

Seriously folks if you ask the average laypeople about which is a more prestigious school, Georgetown or Duke, they will first tell you that they know that Harvard, Yale and Princeton are very prestigious academically. Then they will tell you that Duke and Georgetown have great basketball teams but don’t know much about their academics. Their final decision as to who is more prestigious would be based on which school got farther in the college basketball playoffs at that point in time - and this year it would be Duke!

Even before I opened this thread, I knew the name Duke would be involved. Only, I thought the other name would be Berkeley, WUSTL, or Northwestern.

Don’t flatter yourself JA. Harvard, Yale and Stanford are significantly more prestigious than Princeton according to a laypeople. Nearly everyone knows that Georgetown is prestigious because of politics and that Duke is prestigious because of its med school/ESPN publicity.

Duke. That is my .1 second, none too carefully thought out answer…

They are really almost equal in prestige, with the vast majority giving the edge to Duke.
