My son got in CWR spring 2024 for Biology with a decent scholarships 106K. We are also waiting to hear from Emory. If we ED 2 to CWR, they will probably offer him a fall semester. Which one would be a better choice? ED 2 to CWR or Emory or take a chance and wait for RD from other schools?any responses will
be greatly appreciated .
How can he apply ED2 after he was already accepted? Did CWRU actually suggest some sort of binding application in return for a possible fall admit?
This doesn’t make sense. Spring 2024 semester starts in a few weeks. Is he in high school still?
What are the other schools he is considering?
If he already applied and was accepted to CWR, I don’t understand how he could submit a second application there. At this point, with a spring ‘24 start, he should be enrolled in all his classes and ready for move-in. Given this, I don’t understand how or why he is still considering applying anywhere else for this cycle.
CWRU did a thing this year where, for some people who applied EA, they gave them admission for Spring 2025 (usually with a given scholarship amount) BUT said if the student would switch their app to ED2 they would be given Fall 2024 Admission.
They also did the same thing with some people who applied EA and they waitlisted with a given scholarship and guaranteed admission for Fall if they switched to ED2.
Was he given the guarantee for Fall 2024 if he did ED2 at CWRU? If so, and it is his first choice & it is affordable for you, that seems like a good option.
If it is NOT his first choice, or if you were not given the guarantee, I would wait to see what other options you have in RD.
Will Emory match or beat Case on cost? This would normally be a question of running the NPC at Emory. You could do the same for any other RD possibility.
If Case is looking like your least expensive option anyway, then just committing to a Fall entry and being done with this whole process would be awfully tempting to me.
One can seriously argue the ethics of making these kinds of offers, which screen scream management IMO
If your son would be thrilled to go to CWRU and it is affordable then applying ED2 to hopefully gain fall admission makes sense (assuming the situation is as described above).
If your son has a strong preference for Emory, the school appears affordable, and he is willing to take the risk then that is fine as well.
IMO this is not a decision that people who never met your son and who are not familiar with your family finances should answer.
There is nothing unethical about this at all. Schools want to be certain their freshman class enrollment is met. Offering another option for fall acceptance ED2 is one way to do so.
I agree with others…if CWRU is his top choice and he also has the scholarship offer if he applies ED2, it’s fine to do this. School has made this offer.
If this kid is having any thoughts that CWRU is not his first choice bar none, he should wait. He always has the CWRU offer of a spring 2025 enrollment.
Sorry for the error. He is a senior. He got an offer for spring of 2025 from CWR. We prefer him to start Fall of 2024.
If your son’s top choice is CWRU, and that fall 2024 admission is guaranteed and the aid to…IF he ED2 at the school. Fine.
Yes, it all makes a lot more sense now, thank you. Agree with @happy1, fwiw.
