Hi, my daughter, a Junior, just got her PSAT score. She got 226. She is in a special program, Texas Academy of Math & Science. She wants to go to medical school in the future. Since the parents here have wealth of information, I want to ask for your advice, which university to apply so she can get scholarship to help her with undergraduate study?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and recommendations!

Does her score qualify her for a National Merit Scholarship? Since med school is on the horizon, she should accumulate the least amount of debt for undergrad. As you know pre-med is not a major, so don’t let that sway her. She can take the basic pre-med courses anywhere because pretty much every school in the country offers the courses.

What is she looking for in a school; big, small, large city, suburban, rural, large greek presence, no greeks, close to home, across country?

yes, she should qualify. For Texas, the cutoff score is 219 last year, 215 this year. Her number should be higher than that. She will have 2 years of college credit if she goes to in state public school. If she gets in Rice, they may give her 1 year’s worth of college credit.

Is money going to be an issue? While she may get a year’s worth of college credit at Rice, they do not do much for their National Merit finalist. Are you looking for schools where you can get the best of both works; big merit money and credit toward the degree?

Yes. Not only because we need to prepare for her medical school cost in the future, I also have 2 other kids younger than her.

Take a look at post 689 for a list of scholarships available at various schools for National Merit Finalists:
