Son starting a new job in San Francisco soon. Any suggestions where to look for housing. He will work in Financial District - South of Marked St. Rent ~2000 and like to be less than 1/2 hr commute. Probably looking to share. From the internet, looks like his 1st choice is South Beach. Other choice may be Mission Bay, Telegraph Hill and Inner Mission. Area south of Civil Center looks like cheaper but snot so sure of the neighborhood. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

SF is a small city…

The South Beach area is good.

If your son is social…I wouldn’t rule out the Marina, Russian Hill, or north Fillmore st. North Beach also works…

The Marina is an upscale area with a good bar scene…great restaurants and young people hang around there…

I would stay away from the Tenderloin, Western Addition, parts of the
Mission…

I don’t think I like that area directly south from the civic center…

^^ what dstark said. South Beach, Marina, North Beach, Russian Hill all good areas for younger set…

parts of Mission Bay area can be a little dicey.

would also add that the market is very hot right now…and if he finds a place, he’ll need to jump on it right away…

Where he can afford.

I think it is cheaper out in the Sunset/Richmond areas and take the bus to the financial district. It tends to be foggier on that side of S.F. but it nice to be close to the park and the ocean.

How far South of Market? If he lives in South Beach, he could walk/bike and save some commute costs, although I don’t think SF’s Muni costs are that spendy. The Sunset could make a half hour commute questionable…

sunset commute to financial districtis fast. westportal to downtown is 15minutes. get a monthly muni clipper card pass
parts of inner mission are okay, but stay away from sixth street. and its where he can afford. for instance there is a cute studio on west portal, top floor corner unit for 1800 a month. and remember, if his first aprartment isnt great, he can move, as is the usual here, once people get established and meet people

Agree SF is great . . . if you can afford it. But, as a just-graduated-from-college person (long, long time ago), I moved from the east coast to Berkeley and commuted by BART to job in SF. Loved it. And it’s a great commute. And more affordable. Most of the people in the office where I worked commuted from elsewhere. In the other direction, lots of young people love living in Sausalito, and can commute from there to SF (financial district) by ferry. So – some options.

Agree that the commute by BART from the East Bay to the Financial District is easier than commuting from parts of the Sunset, and the weather is better.

Agree that commuting can be a lot easier. Berkeley has a lot of apartment options but they go quick because of all the students so don’t wait around if you find one. Oakland can also be nice as long as you’re in the hills/avoiding the bad parts. Bart is very accessible and an easy commute (I know rockridge to Powell takes a little under half an hour on Bart). Definitely don’t rule out the east bay!

Friends of mine say SoMA or Mission is where all the young kids are but parts can be sketchy.

There are lots of helpful posts on the “where to live in San Francisco” thread on this forum, including info on East Bay and other neighborhoods and comparisons with various areas of SF.

Finding an apartment in SF could be tricky for a first timer.
You may want to consider San Mateo County, in addition to East Bay. There are many TOD (Transit Oriented Development) along the BART Stops. The Best would be near the Millbrae BART station, however, it might take longer than 1/2 hour on commuting. There are apartments in the range you are looking for next to the Daly City, Coma, San Bruno and SSF stops as well, you may look into it.

The BART San Bruno Stop is right in a large shopping center, there is a LARGE Apartment complex across street and the SSF stop is next to Keiser Hospital and Costco.

thanks for all the replies. he flies out to SF next week and starts working the following week. he will be staying in a hotel for a couple of week or until he find something. he has been out for school 2 years. he current job is about an 45 min to an hour drive with traffic and he hates it. Last year he moved to a new condo and cuts his commute to 20min. For his new job, he wants to be closer. He does not plan to have a car (at least for now). He will be working for a consulting firm and is expecting to put in a lot of hours. that’s why he prefers looking just the nearby neighrborhood to the financial district. we’ll see what he finds out there.

My H’s company is doing work in SF and to save on hotel costs they just rented an apartment in the Financial District (they have an office there). Company is located in MA and some of the MA employees are often out in SF. Apartment complex is called The Gateway. I have no idea what the rent is, but one big benefit is that it’s really convenient for people who work long hours–first floor of the complex has a grocery store, cleaners, bank, Starbucks, etc. There is also a Farmer’s market a few blocks away. Good luck to your son! I’m tagging along with my H when he goes out there next week.

Gateway…^^^That is a place $2000 do not go far.

Avalon at Mission Bay North “still” has some studio apt for $2650/mo
Just visited a son of my friend, he got a small one bed in a 4 story walk-up for about 4000 but that is Presidio. I thought the kid should have his head checked, nevertheless, who cares when some one works for Lucas.
