Holding everything else constant, is a degree in Statistics or Economics more prestigious in your opinion?

Statistics. Everyone thinks they understand economics.
Statistics. Economics grads are by and large the ones who blew up the economy. It may not be fair, but the stigma exists. Plus, upper level statistics is dang hard.

As a contrary opinion, some might perceive a Statistics degree as Math-lite, while Economics might be seen as a very difficult liberal art major. Most know Economics requires a certain level of proficiency in math, while Statistics suggests you could not handle a traditional math major.
This is one of those questions that is perhaps interesting in theory, but completely silly in practice.
^ Agree with the above.
This is about as useful a discussion as whether VS models or SI swimsuit models are sexier (or rather, whether Macy’s models or Target models are sexier).
A stats degree is more rare while econ degrees are common. I don’t know how you would describe one as more prestigious than the other.
And Econ degrees come in many flavors
^ as do stats degrees.
If you are using salary as a measure of prestige, statistics majors can outearn econ majors in general. Not sure about specific high paying jobs with an Econ degree, but with a statistics degree you can be an Actuary which is tough and rigorous (up to 9 exams). Actuaries for property and casualty can make $80-$120k with 5 exams passed (5 years out) and up to $500k with twenty years in the industry attaining the highest license.
I think Stats would sound more fancy… Most people would think that it require lots of math, while some people don’t think Econ requires math…
Why do you care which is more prestigious? Is that the best basis for a choice for anyone? If you are not choosing, why are you doing a “survey”? Study what interests you.
Whoever cares about 'which sounds more prestigious ’ clearly is in no position of influence or power (it sounds like what high school kids would ask, not knowing a thing about the fields, jobs, etc. I guess academics could ask that in a joke kind of way, but they’d be more precise than that and use major thinkers from each field.)
So, your answer is 'whatever '. Or ‘Philosophy’.
Note that economics majors aren’t responsible for the 2008 crisis - by and large, it’d be quants from prestigious universities, some of whom may have been economics majors, but that major would have been peripheral to their position and role.
Come on, don’t be a kill joy. Ginger or Maryanne? BBQ sauce or gravy with strips?

Exactly. Because that’s my job.
