Which teachers at IU should i try for? current students help!

I’m a kelley direct admit majoring in marketing and management. I am planning my schedule in a few days at my orientation and I’ve looked at the 2009 class schedules and there are multiple teachers for the classes I want, so I was looking for some input on which teachers are better or easier, or if there are any teachers to completely avoid! Thanks a lot.

for Accounting A-100… Winston or Owen?

for Business Presentations x104… Kolovou or Fletcher?

for Math-119 Brief Survey of Calc… Levenburg, Boggess, Whelan or Gernhardt?

for Math -118 Finite Math … Orrick, Steele, McKinley, Kattner, or Dabrowski?

for English W-131… Hartwell, Kaul, Reynolds, Bagramyan, or Lonich?

for Business Communiations x204…Steiner-Williams ,Easton,McKowen, Rieseberg?

Thanks soooo much.

A-100: Doesn’t matter, I had Owen for Business Law and she was a pretty cheerful teacher, but it’s only an 8 weeks class and it’s a huge class (over 200), so I don’t think it matters that much.

X-104: never had any of these

M119: anyone but levenberg

M118, McKinley…hands down the one of the best teachers, try and get him

W131: It’s a crapshoot, most are graduate student TAs

X204: I’m not sure if she’s teaching it this upcoming semester, but Ryan was pretty good

Also, be sure to check RateMyProfs and the IU grade distribution database at registrar.indiana.edu

X-104 – Fletcher is an easier grader than Kolovou, although you will learn a lot in Kolovou’s class. Definitely sign up for a direct admit only section, as a lot of your grade is group presentations and you want to make sure everyone in your group is a hard worker, which direct admits tend to be. The later in the day for Fletcher or Kolovou’s direct admit classes the better; don’t sign up for the eight a.m.'s and also avoid the 9:30 sections, because the early X104’s tend to get canceled at the last minute if not enough people sign up; also, if not enough direct admits sign up for an early class, they may let non-direct admits in and then you will risk getting a lower grade because of doing group work with non direct admits.

X 204 – you should not take this class and X104 the same semester; it will require too much schedule juggling to meet for group presentations. Take X104 before you take X204, so you will have some presentation skills before doing X204 and its case competition.

a100 - doesn’t matter

math 119 - I have boggess for stats (math k-310) and he’s okay. He’s not amazing, he’s not horrible. He is pretty fair; if you think you deserve more points for something and give good reasons he gives them to you.

math 118 - I am taking this class in the fall w/ McKinley, I hear he’s really good and he’s really easy. I am going to be in the 2pm class, maybe we will end up together?

bus x204 - Anybody except John Meunier. He gave 85% of the class B+'s. He gave out 1 A and 3 A-'s. He is bad at helping you with things and is a pretty strict grader.

thanks so much everyone! this has really helped me!
I’m making my schedule thursday or friday when I go for orientation. I’m trying to fill my pre reqs for I-Core. So far I’m thinking

Fall
Accounting A100 (8 week course)
Business Presentations x104
Business k220 The Computer in Business
English W-131
Math M-118

Spring
A202- Intro to Managerial Accounting
x204- Business Communications
M-119 …unless i test out of calc?
L100 Personal Law or L201 the legal environment of the business
A-163 Music Industry I

Feedback? am i missing anything? I tested out of all history credits from APs, possibly one science and i am trying to test out of calculus at orientation.

Your first semester looks good.

For second semester, you should take A201 Intro to Financial Accounting before taking A202 Intro to Managerial Accounting.

L100 Personal Law is not required for any Kelley majors, so you should take L201 instead. L201 is an I-Core prerequisite. Also, you have to be sophomore standing (26 or more credits), unless you are in Hutton, by the beginning of Spring 2010 to take L201 Legal Environment of Business that semester.

A163 ARTS WORLD:MGMT,MARKETS&POLICY and A236 Music Industry I are SPEA classes, so they won’t help you at all for your Kelley major requirements or in fulfilling the 27 credit hour core.

Here are the distribution option classes

thanks so much everyone!
this has helped me a lot!

maxellis, are you taking your m-118 on tuesday and thursdays? because i think im trying for mckinleys 2pm tuesday and thursday class!

I am in the Tuesday Thursday 1pm-2:15pm class. It would be great to have someone to bounce ideas off of if I get stuck on a topic.

My son wants to mix entertainment industry with his buisness courses (wants to work in LA after graduation) He is a Kelley Direct admit, could he choose the field specialization option (Communication, film studies and take all 27 credits there) instead of GE courses?

Fall
Accounting A100
Business Presentations 104
Business k-220 The Computer in Business
Math M-118
Hollywood I C 290

Spring
A201- Intro to Financial Accounting
204- Business Communications
M-119 Survey Calculus
L-201 Legal Envoirment in Businesss
C-292 - Hollywood II

He got a 4 on the AP english so he is exempt from W 131 thank goodness!

ebayispayingforcollege, yes he could do that. Take all nine courses in the Communication and Culture department. Here is a list of the qualifying field specialization departments.
[Kelley School of Business Undergraduate 2008-2010 Online Bulletin: Bachelor of Science in Business](http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/business/2008-2010/bachelor.shtml#deg)

Also, your son might consider doing the field specialization option AND getting a minor in Communication and Culture. The minor consists of taking only five classes, but they have to be the right ones.

"The CMCL minor requires a minimum of 15 credit hours in the department, including the following:
* C190 or C205 (3 cr.)
* 9 credit hours of upper-division courses in the department, of which at least 3 credit hours must be at the 400 level "
[Undergraduate: Department of Communication and Culture: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.indiana.edu/~cmcl/undergraduate/requirements.shtml)

Also, the Communication and Culture department has lots of classes that fall into the A&H and S&H categories of the distribution option. So he could take two A&H and three S&H communications classes and get the minor, and do the distribution option instead of the field specialization.

CMLC A&H classes are C190, C205, C208, C228, C238, C304, C306, C308, C312, C313, C321, C323, C324, C326, C333, C335, C339, C340, C391, C392, C393, C394, C398, C414, C425.

CMLC S&H classes are C122, C201, C202, C203, C204, C223, C225, C229, C290, C292, C305, C314, C315, C318, C336, C380, C411, C412, C413, C415, C417, C420, C422, C430.

Thank you Bthomp!

I told my son that he could take his GEs in Film and Media Study (in communication dept) and he is very happy to be able to take classes that he will enjoy. As far as a minor, he hasn’t made a decision yet. He did very well in the DECA competitions for 3 years in Sports Marketing/Entertainment and I am hoping he will minor in that, but right now he seems focused on business in entertainment.

OK, now I have another question. Students can take up to 17 credit hrs per semester, how do I find out how many credit hours each class is worth?

go DECA!! i did business and financial services marketing research the past 2 years and made top 10 at nationals this year…im going to indiana too so hope to see ur son there!

Actually a lot of the film and media stuff (like writing screenplays or doing graphic design, or working in a TV station or radio station) isn’t in the Communications department, it is in the Telecommunications department–so look at both departments’ courses, and then decide which one works best for your son.

Jarad - Are you going to focus on marketing too?

Calcruzer- Son’s interests lie solely in entertainment marketing in business as of now, who knows when they graduate? Not really the creative part. I think he was inspired by watching “Entourage” - LOL!
But in anycase, I think the more classes he takes in the study of film and media will give him specialization and knowledge in the business in case he stays with it. Kelley has a really good program that allows students to tailor the focus to what suits them.

Not really a teacher based question but since there are some other posts of this nature in here I’ll just throw this question out there.

I’m going to orientation in a few days and was wondering, should we try to pack all the I-core prereqs together and get them over with as quick as possible or should we try to spread them out with some of our general ed courses and electives?

twigman,

I suggest mixing up the business I-Core prereqs and the general ed courses. However, you should definitely get the required courses for admittance to Kelley (the business school) completed by the end of the first year if you are not already a direct admit business student.

ebayispayingforcollege,
Based upon what you post here, I agree that a business major and communications minor is the best choice for your son–and it sounds like you and he have already figured that out.

ebayispayingforcollege, no i do not plan to study marketing at this time…currently i plan to be a finance major

Well, came back from and some classes were already filled. Any teachers to be wary of here? I know he went late to orientation…
Son got
Bux 104 With Paige
Math 119 with Hendrickson
Econ 201 with Graf
PSY 101 with Seger
EDU Leadership seminar with RJ (that he will drop if he gets the waitlisted class)

Waitlisted for CMCL-C 190

(was disappointed the film classes were filled - guess they go quickly!)
Also, son loves PSY and wanted this class, I think he should have taken an I-Core, but he does not listen to me ever)

I had Econ 201 with Graf last year. From my experience with him and hearing about friends experiences with other 201 professors, it seems like he is the best 201 teacher at IU. He has been my favorite professor at IU so far.

Oh, that is so good to hear! My son took AP Economics this (senior) year, but he was so overloaded with APs and the teacher was one he didn’t enjoy, that he dropped it. Its really great to hear a good experiance. I will pass it on to him (Too busy working double shifts at the pool to make some college money to go on CC like me!)

Thank you!
