Which test results to report?

Hi,

For the schools that have the option to report ACT, can you tell me which ACT tests my son should report? He has taken the SAT and ACT and will definitely report his SAT.

SAT Oct/2016 1420: 760M 660V writing score 6,5,6
SAT Jun/2017 1540: 800M 740V writing-4 score 5,4,5

ACT Feb/2016 35M 28S 25R 27E 29 Composite no essay
ACT Apr/2016 31M 28S 32R 35E 32 Composite no essay
ACT Jun/2016 34M 28S 29R 32E 31 Composite no essay

For the ACT, he was very sick in Feb so we signed up for April right away. But he got his 35 in math in Feb.
We were hoping he’d get all his high scores in June, but the June results contribute nothing toward super scoring.

We are in NorCal and he wants to major in CS. Applying to in-state and out of state schools. The best CS program he can get into.

Here’s a bigger picture.

His GPA is 4.0W /3.66UW
AP Calc BC -4
AP CS Principles - 4
AP Lang & Comp - 3

Chemistry Subject test taken after sophomore year - 700
Math-2 - 750 (Poor son didn’t know he could bring a graphing calculator)

Good ECs.

Save some money and just send the 1540 SAT! It’s a better result than any of his ACT attempts, including a superscore of 32.5 composite.

I would only send the SAT- it’s a fabulous score. Congrats!

Thanks for the response @mamaedafamilia and @twogirls. This is my first child so I’m very nervous, especially since S likes to keep me on the edge of my seat with his grades and scores all over the map.

Do you know if the UCs will require me to send all the ACT scores, even though he didn’t do the essay for the ACT? I’m just wondering if we can act like the ACT never happened so we can save money too, like you suggested.

@deadbeef00 Most schools do not require you to send all tests taken except for a few high caliber ones like Ivies, who will explicitly ask for all. Check the UC application requirements online, but I do not believe they require all tests. In general, such policies can be a barrier to entry for poorer students, so I would usually assume public schools do not have that policy.

UC’s require you send all SAT scores or all ACT scores. You do not need to send both SAT/ACT.
On the application, he will just report his highest SAT score of 1540.

EDIT: UC’s do require the ACT with writing, so sending the ACT is moot.

Very helpful! Thank you all for answering my first post on this forum!

By the way, excuse me for the horrible sounding username, but I was running out of ideas when I was trying to come up with something, and as a software engineer, DEADBEEF has special meaning :))

Yes, it’s not the most poetic username ever. I agree that the 1540 SAT is the only one that should be sent, unless a college requires all sittings of a test.

I would try to put my best foot forward.

I agree, the SAT score is fabulous, no reason to send the ACT scores at all which make him look less accomplished.
