I’m currently at Penn State right now, which requires a public speaking course (CAS100A) in order to graduate.
However, I’m very very likely to transfer out to another school (Columbia, NYU, Gtown, etc)

Trying to decide if I should drop the speech class (it’s got quite the work load on top of my already 16 credits), especially if top schools don’t even require it.

Transferring to avoid just one course, to me, seems very stupid. Please tell me that there are other things that are driving you away from Penn State or pulling you to another school.

Brown famously doesn’t require much to graduate, and of all the schools I know something about, none require such a course, but I think they should. I took a public speaking course this summer at Brown, and it was a huge help. The fear of public speaking is on par with the fear of death- why not get over the fear of SUCH a useful skill that’ll do nothing but help you throughout life in a safe place like a classroom?

I haven’t heard of any private school (within CC range, so you know, the top 100) that actually requires a public speaking course. If you’re actually afraid of public speaking then you need to take one. Just look online (rate my professors) and find a class that’s going to be helpful and not stupid, as with any class.

I’m not afraid of public speaking. I presented in front of 100+ students and faculty twice (undergrad research fair). I just think it’s a waste of time to have to take a COURSE on it, especially since the prof is soooo strict about preparation. he grades you so meticulously its ludicrous.
and now especially since i have like a 99% chance of transferring out, the question of dropping becomes even more apparent.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I’ll probably be dropping the course.
