Requirements for the major include the following:
Minimum grade of C (2.0) in a course articulated to UCSC’s introductory biology courses, BIOL 20A and BIOE 20C or BIOE 20B. (An AP Biology score of 5 can be substituted for BIOL 20A and BIOE 20B.)
Minimum grade of C (2.0) in a course articulated to UCSC’s introductory chemistry course sequence of CHEM 1A and CHEM 1B (complete chemistry series, 1A, 1B, 1C recommended). An AP Chemistry score of 5 can be substituted for CHEM 1A.
Minimum grade of C (2.0) in a course articulated to UCSC’s MATH 11A or MATH 19A or AMS 15A*. (An AP Calculus AB score of 4 or 5, or an AP Calculus BC score of 3, 4, or 5, can be substituted for MATH 11A or Math 19A.) *Note: Students who have not yet completed a course in calculus may still qualify for the Biology B.A. major.
Minimum grade point average of 2.0 in the above major-preparatory courses.
At the time of submitting the TAG application, a student must have completed at least one biology course from the list above (#1) and one chemistry course from the list above (#2) with minimum grades of C (2.0), or applicable AP exam credit (listed above). All other course requirements must be listed as either in-progress or planned on the TAG application, showing completion no later than the end of the spring 2016 term.
While not required for selection, junior-level transfer students are strongly encouraged to have completed the calculus series: MATH 11B, MATH 19B, or AMS 15B and the complete biology series (20A, 20B, and 20C) for their intended major prior to enrolling at UCSC.
