Which Univ can I consider for an undergrad Finance/Maths/Econ-degree?

Hi everyone, I found this forum by using google.

First, Im from Germany and Ill finish highschool next year in May. I havent taken any SATs so far, so I can not give any results on that.
Ive been to the US for a whole year 2 years ago, when I did a student exchange program. Actually, I went to Laredo, Texas.

So far I would like to know what are the chances for getting in for an international applicant and which Top Universities can I consider for a Business Degree, mainly Finance or Economics or maybe Mathematics as well?
I read UT at Austin is one of the Top-Finance-Universities in the US is that true?

The year I participated at American highschool I finished in the Top 1% (Rank 3 out of 420) with a 4 in AP Calculus (I didnt study for that actually, dont know, I like Maths  ), but I dont know if American colleges would consider something like that.
Over here in Germany I belong to the top 5% but my GPA is probably way lower, somewhere around 3.6/4.0 if I translated it someway.

Can you give any suggestions? I dont worry about financing the whole program, as far as Im concerned there are lots of scholarships and student loans around.

I dont really care if the Univ is some type of suburban or urban type or in the middle of nowhere, I mostly care about nice career options (good placement or a possible target univ for recruiting by I-Banking or Consulting) and an active student class.

I dont think Im good enough to apply to the Ivy League-Colleges so what are my chances of getting in to Universities like UC Berkeley, UT Austin or UCLA?

It is pretty hard for me to find any good information on that since I am abroad right now, so I hope you can help me out.

Sincerly,
Gottesschaf

US university/college consider AP. UC Berkeley and UCLA need a gpa of 3.9+ for out-state students including international students, so I reckon you should look somewhere else. If you want to major in Business/Eco/Finance I think you should consider to go to university in a city like NY or Boston. I can’t really say much if I don’t know what your SAT score are. I think you should consider Tufts University, University of Michigan, University of Illlinois and Penn State - university park. If you want to apply for Fall 2008, you should take SAT on this Dec.

UC Berkeley is pretty much right near top in the nation in terms of finance and math, although getting into the business school is hard.

UCLA will be hard, too. A 3.6 won’t put you out though, as you’re still in the top 5%. Everything is placed in context.

As Kritamait said, definitely look at Michigan, too. Amazing school.

I don’t know your SAT score, which is likely taken into heavy consideration for international applicants, as while it isn’t really a predictor of intelligence, it’s still a standardized/universal test.

UT-Austin is not top in the nation. However, it’s still a very good school (if you do well on the SAT, aim for the honors program. I hear it’s a huge difference from the normal business school). Texas is a lot different from the rest of the US, but if you liked it there, definitely apply to Austin. I personally loved it, although it gets ridiculously hot/humid at times.

Other AP scores, standardized tests, or rankings/competitions in Germany will be taken into consideration.

I’d email the admissions offices to ask for information on how they handle international students.

Haas business school only accepts students at junior standing. You have to apply to Berkeley as “Undeclared - Pre-Business”, and then apply to Haas during your sophomore year.

You can also major in econ and math at Berkeley without applying to Haas.

Thanks so far,

I dont how if it still be possible for me to register for the SAT in December since I dont have too many possibilities to take it in Germany.

I would not think that I would score high on the SATs considering the fact that the reading and writing part is very hard for non-first-speakers in English. I tried out the PSAT while I was at highschool and I scored on the 2400 maximum score a 1600 as far as I can remember with a 700 in the maths part and only a 400-500 on the writing/reading skills, just because I dont know so many words. Maths just dont need the language, if you know what Im trying to say.

I just want to consider the top universities in the US for applying, because on the one side I read I need a 75$ fee to apply, on the other side I want to work in an international environment later on and I do not think every boss in the human resources department knows the not so famous but still good colleges in the states . In this case it would be easier to apply for a good German Univ.
Actually I just want to apply in order to maybe have a possibility, I dont really calculate my future with being accepted in Berkeley or Wharton or whatever :)

So far I would consider Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan and Texas. I dont think I am good enough for MIT, Wharton or Harvard, you know…

edit: Is it maybe a criteria that I finished top 1% in an american highschool? Do you think that may helps?

does anyone have still more suggestions?
