Which university would be best for biochemistry degree? I will be applying to these universities in the fall.
My list of colleges are:
University of Maryland College Park University of Maryland Baltimore county
University of California Los Angeles (Reach School)
University of California Santa Barbara San Francisco State University University of San Francisco
I would not worry about which school is best until you get accepted, then decide. In the meantime, have you visited the schools? Why not try to sit in on a Biochem lecture or contact the department heads if you have specific questions.
I’m also doing college research and am interested in studying biochem/molecular bio as well!
UMaryland is a good research school, definitely UCLA. I don’t know much about UCSB or SF State, but I’m assuming the UC’s all have decent enough research programs. UCB has an amazing bio/genetics lab.
I also recommend looking at UMiami, Case Western, Stony Brook, UPitt, and Rutgers. These are schools I’ve been research at least! I don’t know your stats so I can’t suggest a category for you, but there’s a spectrum…if UCLA is a reach for you, then I bet Stony Brook, Pitt, and Rutgers could be low match/safeties (they’re all state schools, so it’s a tinier bit harder OOS…I’m assuming you’re from CA though)…UMiami and Case could be matches.
Don’t visit UCSB on a sunny Friday after 3 pm, My son and I went there on such date in 2007 and is was the most gorgeous place on earth and the deep blue ocean and the surfers and the beach scene just right there. Needless to say , my son changed his major from architecture to engineering so he can go there…He refused to visit other campuses that also accepted him ( UCLA, UVA, UCSD, Virginia Tech ) … It was the best time of his life . Engineering was really tough but…
