Hi guys! I am a future student at NYU Tisch Film(accepted EDII) and
I’ve mainly been filming with my 5D Mark II until now.
and as a high school graduation, my dad has offered me a $7k budget for a nice quality video camera body.
Could you guys, as a experienced filmmaker, please recommend me which camera body I should purchase?
I was looking at Sony FS700R but some people have told me that its not worth a $6k budget. Is this really true?
This is going to be my only video camera that I am going to be using for a very long time.
Also, which lens would you recommend as my only lens for my camera?
I will chime in here, but I have to admit that I do not do video except as an occasional thing; I’m a still photographer. So, I will not recommend a specific camera, but will suggest that having only one lens is probably a bad idea. I have a Nikon D4 camera body, which replaced a D700 body, which replaced a D50 body. My lenses have stayed the same over those years, are worth as much as the camera bodies, and I expect to have the lenses for years to come. Improvements in lens technology are slow relative to the leaps made in camera bodies.
My personal approach, and I admit that I don’t “know video,” is to invest in quality lenses that will last years, and purchase yesterday’s hot camera, USED, from a reputable camera dealer. I think that’s how you get the most bang for the buck.
