Whiffenpoofs - costumed member?

Ok, I didn’t go to Yale but I enjoy a good a Capella here and there. I stumble on Yale’s Whiffenpoofs cover of "The Boxer"and I see a member wearing a costume while the other students are dressed to the 9’s. I found another concert and some kid is dressed like a member of the Blue Man Group and anther instance where one is Mickey Mouse!

Why Why Why WHY?

What a bizarre question. They saw fit to do those as part of their entertaining the audience. Do you suppose something else?

My understanding is that it is a tradition that one person stand out like that. Its a “thing” that they do and are known for. I can’t tell you where it began or why though.
