While we are on the topic of vermin...

See the mice thread. But I have a different problem, so I am starting a new discussion. Last winter, we were infested with stink bugs. I’ve read that the only way to stop them is to prevent them from coming into your house when the weather starts to get cold. In Maine, where I currently live, this will be very soon. Does anyone have this problem and have a solution for dealing with it effectively? I am not averse to using chemicals. I just want to use something that works.

I don’t know that this will work, but once we had a lady bug infestation… they could squeeze through the door at the top. I put Glad wrap at the top of the door, and it really helped. How do the stink bugs get in? If they are squeezing around the windows or doors, something like this may work.

Our house is so old it is a colander! We do plan to replace/refurbish the old windows, but not all at once.

Are you talking about the Western Conifer Seed Bug? Ugly things and they’re good at squeezing through cracks.

Might be worthwhile getting a pest control company out. They can spray the perimeter of you foundation and they can also caulk up crack and crevices.

No, this one is halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug. It’s a relatively new invasive pest from Asia. I don’t think it has any natural enemies in North America. It causes a lot of agricultural damage and also can be allergenic. But my big concern is that these critters are just nasty and they really stink.

@Massmomm I assume you are talking about these?

We get them every year and I hate them but can never get rid of them. One thing you shouldn’t do is smash them, at least that’s what I’ve been told because it attracts more. I’m not sure if that’s even true.

Ugh, yes, @partyof5 ! Those are the ones!

@Massmomm I hate those little prehistoric bugs ugh. We get a ton of them!!

More than most of ever wanted to know about these bugs—ugh!

Oh my word, @HImom ! I might have to hate you for showing me that! Grossest read ever. :-&

And here I had thought this was a political thread

Stink bugs? That’s awful!

LIfe’s tough enough without these extra bugs. :frowning:

From Partyof5’s link: “If you need to get rid of stink bugs that have already entered a home or building, a vacuum cleaner can aid in the removal of live or dead stink bugs.” I was going to suggest the same. Worth it to have a stick vac on each affected floor. Lightweight, easy empty, not expensive.

Will steal your “collander” comment.

@busdriver11 - get ready. They are already here in WA, and our fruit is in danger. :frowning:

@HImom - I may be scratching myself all day thanks to you! That article reads like a nightmare.
We have them here in NJ, but so far, we haven’t experienced anything at our house that comes close to what the couple in the story experienced. Thank God!!

Sorry—I thought we should all feel fortunate not to have the problems described in the article!

Since we are talking about bugs, I am struggling to get rid of Daddy Long Legs spiders. I mistakenly did not kill the first one up high in the shower, now they are everywhere, I wouldn’t be so offended, but dang, they put cobwebs everywhere. My house looks like the Addams family, overnight! I vacuum them from all the corners every weekend and whenever I see one, but they just keep coming.

I have killed seven spiders (I think they might be what are called “house spiders” in the PNW) in the past 2 weeks in my apartment. I am pretending that each one is the last one. :frowning:

My cats are too smart to go after those marmorated stinkers and daddy longlegs… Sigh. But they do take care of any flies, wasps, or crane flies pronto.

@somemom , we’ve got those, too! I’m kind of hoping they prey on the stink bugs! There are so many on the stairs leading down to the basement that my son calls that passageway “the devil’s anus.”

The stinkers have very few natural enemies. It looks like spiders will not touch them. I do not blame them…
