Watch your speed driving up–photo radar. Beautiful area.

Just got back from Whistler. It’s a beautiful place. I spent most of the time in a conference but did get out to see the village and take the ski lift up to the nice restaurant at the top (or near it) of Whistler Mountain. Unfortunately we were stranded there as the main route from Vancouver was closed due to a rock slide on Tuesday night. Nobody was injured but a bus was damaged that barely missed the rock slide. We had to take a seven-hour bus ride at 2:00 AM to get back to Vancouver to head home.

Whistler is the site of some of the Winter 2010 Olympics and it’s a great site but they’re going to have to have some backup planning in case there’s another rock slide. Our options were a float plane (takes off on a lake) and the long bus ride.

One other funny thing is that US and Canadian currency are treated as equals. You can pay in Canadian or US. It was quite convenient.

We have been back 2 weeks. I was complaining about our bus driver and the almost 4 hour ride. A construction tractor actually passed us. Cannot imagine 7 hrs! Glad no one was hurt. Whistler is beautiful! Won’t return before 2011. The construction for olympics kept me in town, no desire to sit in a vehicle till we had to leave. Several in our group were super thril seekers. I was very content with hikes, gandola trips and bike rides. Did see a bear the first day walking to the village:)

There were several reports of bears by our group. The 7 hour ride was to go north, east, south, and then west to get to Vancouver. It wasn’t the short route on the Sea to Sky highway. Not a bad idea to wait until after 2011. The construction will keep the road slow for a while.

if you are driving to Whistler you may want to check on road conditions
