White Dress for Graduation!

We have to start looking soon. Anyone have any ideas of here to shop (on a reasonable budget) in Southern New England?

Wouldn’t it be easier to order something online?
I wouldn’t think that white dresses would be in stores at this point in the winter.

If you can find a good seamstress - I would consider having one made. You get exactly what you want, made to fit, different from all the rest - and often equal to or less than what you can get in the stores.

high school graduation? or college?

I got D1’s white dress(es) off eBay. They were so inexpensive, I was able to buy a few to let her pick. She used them later in college also.

Wow, Oldfort, I was curious and checked out ebay. You can search by color, size, sleeve type, etc. Never know!

My daughter bought a dress that looked quite a bit like that Nordstrom dress ^^^ at Target in early May (for an early June h.s. graduation). I would have taken her to the mall, but hey, she found a dress she loved at Tar-zhay. (She’s not a white dress person - we didn’t need one that she’d wear over and over.) The white dresses will be in the stores soon…

Our school requires white dresses for graduation. Bridal shops are a favorite place to look. I don’t have a daughter but the moms who do say it can be a real challenge. Especially since our dresses can’t have spaghetti straps or be strapless and must be certain length. Much easier with a boy. Good luck.

It sure is pretty though. At my school we wore long white dresses and carried red roses. Meanwhile my sons are stuck with purple cap and gowns. They look ridiculous. Especially my older son with his geekfro. (Though S2’s shoulder length hair - I think may also look interesting.)

Last year when my D was looking for a grad dress BCBG had a whole section of white short dresses. Some of them were quite tasteful.
edit- doesn’t look like they have much in white now
also bluefly lets you sort by color

You can try kathlinargirochic.com I’m not sure about the prices but they do advertise that they make graduation dresses. Does the dress have to be long? If it doesn’t have to be long you can try white house/black market. You can usually find dresses there for under $200.

WHBM doesn’t have any white dresses at present.

Wow, lots of great answers, thank you. We haven’t seen anything in the stores yet, although she claims that “everyone is getting their dress.” To Which, my answer is “Where?” The nothing too sketchy requirement will be mine, not the school’s.

DD needed white dresses every summer for years for summer music festivals. We got them in the early spring. Truthfully…never had a problem finding more than one…and she had all lengths from knee length to floor length. Just be patient…but persistent. When they come in, you want to be there.

Thumper- then you would be the perfect person to answer the next question! we also need to find a floor length black dress for a special concert. In this case, I could absolutely care less about fashion, alhough she may…the cheaper the better. Unfortunately, the one left over from 8th grade is too tight!

Our D’s high school did the white formal gowns with red roses for graduation. She went to an all girl private school. Her older sister graduated from there as well and for her we went to a second hand boutique specializing in wedding gowns. We bought one and then had a seamstress customize it. Was perfect for much less than a new dress. For younger D, we went to David’s Bridal and she bought a dress for $299 and then we had it hemmed and the train removed. It would have been much easier and cheaper if younger D would have worn her sisters dress but she did try it on and it just wasn’t her.

can it be 2 pieces? a long black skirt with a black top in a style she would want to wear again?

My daughter got most of her black wear at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. She didn’t wear dresses, chose skirts or dress slacks and also had a variety of black tops. The one black dress she had came from Petite Sophistocate. It was a black slinky knit with a black jacket. Plain and nice.

Post your question on the music major forum. There are some VERY savvy music parent shoppers there.

How about a desired price point for the white dress?

$299 seems VERY expensive to me! (no girls at my house…)

WhiteHouse/Black Market will usually have very pretty white dresses. We are just beginning our graduation dress search.
