This weekend are the White House Garden Tours. Has anyone ever gone?
I am thinking of going and they begin handing out timed tickets at 8 am. I am just wondering if this is something that you need to be standing in line for at 5 am to get a ticket.

You’d probably have to get there earlier than 5 a.m. I went about 20 years ago, and it was beautiful. It all depends on how long you’re willing to wait and whether you’re willing to risk getting turned away if tickets run out. It would be an adventure. Be sure to check the White House website for the list of things you can and can’t bring onto the grounds. dcist.com has updates about things like this. Maybe someone else has more recent experience.

Oh dear, the Metro doesn’t run until 7 am. Thanks for the link.

If you are downtown really early, you should be able to park for free along the Mall on Constitution or Independence. Just check the signs carefully to make sure that the spot is free for the whole day.

What if you drove to the Metro station early in the morning, left your car there and called a cab to drive you in. Then the Metro would be up and running when you were done with the tour, and you wouldn’t have to pay for a cab both ways.
