OK, converting from lurker to poster. I’m a graduating high school senior who applied to the summer program, but don’t dismiss me for my age. I interned in a european parliament, worked for a US Senator, and did a whole bunch of environmental preservation work. Nonetheless, I still haven’t heard anything other than receiving a processing email a month or so ago.

I had the Chief of Staff of this senator send in a third letter of recommendation directly to the White House intern coordinator who he apparently knows personally. I also sent an email inquiring about the entire process and asking if there were any information available regarding notifications earlier this week, but I’m still yet to hear anything.

I find it hard to believe that they lost my application completely considering the initial successful submission, the letter from the Chief of Staff, and the email earlier this week, but I’m sort of confused as to why I haven’t heard anything.

I’ve checked my spam folder of my email continuously, my voicemail, and I’ve also returned every missed call on my phone. Do they not send any notification if you don’t get a position? Any ideas?

Yankee,

Wow, you are an impressive high school student. You get notified if you don’t receive the internship, so just try and be patient, your email is coming soon.

Denver

Any word anyone? Nothing here.

For those who got accepted, can you post stats? Like when it’s out!

Yea! No word here, I feel like everyone has gone radio silent who was active before

Stats? Do you mean like GPA, School, etc? Part of the acceptance is an explicit mention of not posting on social networking sites. I worry that if I put my stats, the White House can track me and then I’ve violated there policy. As long as we remain usernames, its anonymous, so no violation. I hope that helps some.

This is getting a bit absurd. If I don’t have an answer by Tuesday I have to accept a different internship (or risk winding up with no internship this summer).

Denver is right. Anonymity is required for this board to have any utility.

Sorry if this is a bad place to post, but it’s the best I could find. How would you advise someone who
is still an early teenager to pursue activities that would lead to a White House Internship little bit later in life?

Your best shot is probably in local government or congressional district offices. Nobody is looking for HS students so you will need to be proactive. Make up a list of local district offices and call them directly. County and state government offices also sometimes take high school students. Don’t even use the phrase ‘internship,’ just say you want exposure and will work for free.

Keep your expectations low. If you get anything, it won’t be prestigious, it likely won’t be substantive, and it won’t be paid.

the WH looks for a commitment to public service, so brainstorm a list of issues that you’re passionate about and find ways to get involved with them (most likely through volunteering). maybe a non-profit you care about needs help, or you can spend time cooking at a homeless shelter or sending care packages to soldiers stationed overseas, or volunteering at an animal shelter. being involved with school clubs is also great - just try making change for the better, wherever you are and however you can.

and ps - good for you for being so focused so early in life! you go!

I would also say that its never too late to do this. I’m in grad school and i’m doing this now (another President was in office when I was in college and I refused to work for him). All that by way of saying don’t feel sad if you haven’t done this by the end of college, there is still time.

For anyone who hasn’t heard back yet, think today’s the day?

I hope but don’t think so; I have a feeling that Friday’s the day…anyone else?

I agree, I think by Friday - I’m just trying not to be worried that I havent heard yet, and telling myself it’s because they’re processing SO much information

I think we may still be looking at another week. Friday would be great, but a week from this Friday may
be more likely.

Really? A week from this Friday? I guess I’ll stop refreshing my inbox…
