White House Internship

vitals are information that the White House needs to create your profile. (Name, social security, address, date of birth, etc.)

Also, I think that just because you passed the interview and security checks, does not mean you will get the internship. They are looking at every piece of your application (from the memo to your criminal record if you have one) to see if you are a great fit for their office. Read previous pages. Some people received interviews, but were rejected. Also be aware that they waitlist applicants.

Since it’s almost 3 weeks until the summer term, I would advise those who have not heard from the White House Internship Program office yet to contact them asap. You literally have 3 weeks to find housing and transportation to get to DC, which isn’t a lot of time.

I was told they would make their decisions in the next 2 days, send the names to the internship office, and then if you were selected you’d receive a “conditional acceptance” and go through security. If you passed security, you’d receive another “conditional acceptance” pending passing a drug test, and if you passed that, you’d have the internship. They did say that after receiving the first conditional acceptance, you might not hear about your security clearance for more than a month (or for months).

Also, does anyone know if it’s possible to get offers from multiple offices? Has this ever happened to anyone or does one office essentially call dibs on you and get the chance to interview you?

Multiple offices can interview you, but one office at the end will accept you as a new intern.

@Samoby You’re right. Once you accept the conditional acceptance, you are conditionally an White House intern. If you pass the drug test with flying colors, you officially become an White House intern. So if you fail the drug test while in DC, you will have to leave the program. Expect to take the test during the first two months of the internship.

I feel very in the dark – no idea that they were selecting interns this week. Did you get this from the internship office or from the dept that interviewed you? They told me none of this on my interview. Even though they said I could call if I had any questions, I didn’t because I figured it was too early to bug them.

I think every office has a different schedule. Again, for me I was told it would be a 2 - 3 week wait.

@live4me what office did you interview for? how many seats?

Hey Guys,

I interviewed on May 2nd. Is it too soon for me to start panicking that I haven’t heard back yet? Also, anyone apply Legislative Affairs or WH Counsel? This forum is great by the way, loads of information. Thanks.

Best

I have no idea on how many seats are available, I assume an extremely limited number. And until the acceptances begin, I would rather not say which office. PM me for more info.

I don’t think you are in a position different from anyone else it seems. I wouldn’t stress until July. Based on prior cycles, it seems that decisions are made throughout the entire session prior to yours starting.

I read on here that GC only accepts law students. I also applied for LA. I’m sure that one is pretty popular.

Hi guys,

Great information on this thread! So, I received a call from the White House Fellows department a few days ago for an interview for Fall 2012. I actually didn’t put White House Fellows as one of my top choices, and I didn’t even know I was going to be interviewed, but they just asked a few questions… pretty expected, nothing too crazy. I was told that all the departments were conducting interviews and making decisions soon and that I would hear back in the next few days/weeks once the departments had finished conducting their interviews. I was also told to contact them if I had any questions, but agreed with the poster above that it seemed too early to bug them and ask about when we would hear back.

I’m guessing they should let us know in the next two weeks or so hopefully. Also, did anyone else interview/apply for White House Fellows?

Updates, anyone?

Hey everyone I found this chat today, this is an awesome way to get information about this process. I just received another Application in Process Email( I think my 3rd) so hopefully I am still in the hunt. About 2 and half weeks ago I interviewed with a department and they said we would be in touch and that sounds like the level where a lot of people are at. Has anyone who applied for the fall had anything besides and interview thus far in the process

I got the application in process email yesterday. I had an interview with a department. I was really caught off guard, no notice and it was with a department that I don’t think was one of my choices.

Ahh I don’t think I did well. I was really nervous.

@m400ham did you have a background check?

Here is my update for Fall,
I’ve had my first interview with a department which wasn’t my choice, and then perhaps I did well?, and got a notice for a second interview within the same department. The second interviewer was a more senior member of the department who evaluated me more. They then told me I will hear a final response in 3-4 weeks.

Anyone else have something similar??

@goforit1 No I haven’t. If that hasn’t happened at this point is that bad?

Update: I was emailed a few days ago and asked to submit a bunch of paperwork for “departmental review.” This included a number of forms for a background check. Not sure what the next step is. Anyone else?

The next step seems to be patient waiting. I received a “departmental review” email a few days ago, and got very geeked out at the prospect of working for the president this fall. It’s been a few days since I submitted it.

I wish there was a definitive answer as to what it all means or how good it looks.

Now, all we can do is wait. It is out of our hands. Perhaps it is the ultimate lesson in patience.

When you guys filled out your paperwork, did any of it include clearance paperwork?
