That sounds like a tough situation. I’d recommend calling each internship program and explaining the situation, starting with the White House. While I doubt they’ll be able to let you know their decision, I would hope they’d at least be able to give a bit more insight into the timeline.

Hopeful - I’m not sure, but from what I’ve read, the process requires that and the background check. Best of luck!

My situation seems to be a little different. I applied for the Spring 2013 internship and have not gotten an interview or departmental review. I did get an email last week saying that they were still reviewing applications and so on…thanks for your patience. Does anyone know what this means?

I called and explained the situation to them on Friday, and they said that they would note my time constraint, and that I would be notified “by or on, Monday at noon.” I still haven’t heard anything yet, so if I don’t hear by 10 am I’ll probably call back.

I would be patient. I don’t presume to know anything about the process or how things work as far as communications go, but since you did get an email recently saying they were still reviewing applications, be patient. We are all eventually notified regarding our applications so, as long as it may seem, we have to let them make their decisions at their own pace.

I was just curious since everyone else is saying they have had an interview or departmental review but I have had neither but still got the e-mail. I am being patient, I was just curious.

Technically, I didn’t apply to any departments this season. I was contacted by referral from an earlier application I submitted. In any case, I was contacted and interviewed by the Office of Digital Strategy.

Still processing as well. I find it extremely irritating that they sent basically the exact same email a week later. Guess I need to ask Santa for a response from them…

I am currently applying for the Summer 2013 internship. Does anyone have any tips? Also, who should I ask for recommendations? Should I ask a friend? Is that not formal enough? I don’t really any employers/professors that can attest to my character.

@dearjen: I would highly caution against using a friend’s recommendation - It is very unlikely they (or any other employer) would take it seriously. As for the employer/professor conundrum, you may be surprised. People are usually excited to recommend good students or employees. Perhaps go to a professor whom you like’s office hours and discuss your aspirations and ask if they would be willing to write you a letter. You might be surprised! @everyone else: Another still processing email. Good grief, nerves for days.

Professors get requests from students all the time for letters of rec. The worst that can happen is that they say no. You won’t know until you ask.

I have been following this conversation for a while and thought I’d finally join. How is everyone’s application going? This is a pretty stressful process!
