White House Internship

Most likely it’s the process that they conduct specifically with the WHIP. Review all apps, notify all applicants, offices request interviews of approved applicants, then final selection is made, then soon as that occurs the security/drug investigation/tests occur so it’s definitely a 3-4 month process once notification begins. Always depends on the type of security clearance, etc. you must undergo (i.e. my prior TSC took 10 months).

MusicallyLatin–that’s good that your other applications aren’t due till March! I didn’t hear for summer '12 until mid-April, so the early due date of the WH application will be to your advantage. You’ll probably hear from all of the employers around the same time, which will make your decision process less stressful. Most people face the opposite problem, where they hear from all their alternatives way ahead of the White House and have to give up waiting on the White House if they want to go with one of their safeties (otherwise risking not having work at all).

They have a new application system they are using now as well so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I believe we are the first group to use the new application system.

Hey! Im new here, but i just submitted for 2013 summer, I was wondering, does me being a current freshman school in the top 35 undergraduate schools hurt my chances. I hear most ppl getting in are grads, I have done a lot, especially in the area where I am applying and have a good amount of public service, but I feel like im not going to get it bc i will only have done my freshamn year by the time of the internship if I get it. Also, if I don’t get it, does anyone know of any alternative internships or jobs similar that I could apply for? Thanks so much!

@FuturePharmD haha no I’m being selfish. It’s burdensome on me to ask people to write me recommendations and then check on them. I feel like I’m nagging.

@WH2013 I haven’t heard of many freshman being admitted but there have definitely been some so you could get it. Im an undergrad too and I know people in my state that were undergrads that got the internship. Either way it goes, you can keep applying. Eventually, you’ll get it!

Is everyone on here that is applying for the internship receiving academic credit as well?

Ha ha. I better. I’m not sure how my school will work it though… e.g. amount of credits, cost, etc.

Hello,

I am new here & have submitted my Summer 2013 application. I have recieved the confirmation of reciept email as well. I am a graduating college senior majoring in Sociology & Political Science. I spent fall 2012 interning in DC on the Hill and would love to go back to the area. Looking forward to sharing this stressful with all of you!

So I’ve been reading some information about how our applications get processed, and it says that the first weeding out process is helped carried out by interns…

I didn’t go to an ivy league/top25 program, and the vast majority of previous interns (it seems like anyway, come from that pedigree.) I’m sure a lot of applications will get a decent shake, but I guess it’s up to the integrity of the intern to not toss your application because they thought you did not go to a “top-quality program.”

IDK, it kind of scares me that there might not be a perm staffer that rechecks the “not” pile. :</p>

Where did you read that? Have I not scoured the page enough?

These past press releases from the White House Internship Program show the diversity of universities attended by the interns:

haha. I was thinking the same thing.

Thanks for the post. Makes me curious as to what the mix of schools applying to the program are as well.

The suspense is killing me, and it’s been only a few days since the application deadline!

I’m so excited to think that I’m in the running for this internship. Although I can’t get my hopes up too high–I feel so under qualified!

Best of luck to everyone!

@1600DC Thanks and best of luck to you as well.

Just looked through all of those lists: Only once in those years was someone from my state accepted. And I’m assuming they were probably at the only law school. Welp… I’m screwed.

@futurepharmD It wouldn’t let me reply to your pm without 15 posts under my belt.

@amplifiar842, thank you for those links! I had a bit of time since I’m off from work to crunch some numbers.

Looking through the list for Summer 2012…
Harvard: 15
Yale: 10
Princeton: 8
Columbia: 4
UPenn: 6
Brown: 1
Cornell: 0
Dartmouth: 0
Total Ivies: 44

Georgetown: 9
GW: 4
Total DC: 13 (I included GW because of it’s strong political science program)

UChicago: 1
Hopkins: 1
WUSTL: 1
Northwestern: 1
Vanderbilt: 1
Emory: 1
MIT: 1
UC-Berkeley: 3
CMU: 3
UCLA: 1
USC: 1
UVA: 2
Total others in the top 25: 17

Total total is: 74. This does not include the top small liberal arts colleges.
Out of 145 interns (if Excel pasted correctly)… that’s 51 percent.

So 49% of the interns came from tier 2 programs or below(or SLACs), which is comforting to me I suppose (I thought the percentage would be much lower.)

I want to stress that I’m not trying to belittle those who are in Tier 1 schools because they are probably well qualified for the WH internship (if they were accepted to such programs… they are well-driven bunch to begin with.) But it does seem my chances get smaller and smaller outside the Tier 1 list. Just an observation, not a deep analysis (perhaps those outside Tier 1 are less-driven than those inside Tier 1.) Still happy with 49 percent! Woohoo!

Ha ha.

While comforting to see the statistics organized out, holy cow, am I still losing hope.

My college, while noted for being a great school, has one of the highest acceptance rates, and is really used by many as a junior college, not a four year college. Here’s to hoping my resume outweighted it all.

I think they’re not that bad odds imo. But I’m starting to treat this as a fire-and-forget thing. Hopefully, I get good news this spring… but if I don’t, no biggie. I’m gonna do my darnedest to “make it” some other way.

If I don’t get it, it doesn’t reflect poorly on me at all since this may be one of the toughest nuts to crack (and I’ve cracked some pretty tough nuts :P)

@LongTimeComing Thank you for posting. I think the important thing to note though is that clearly these schools actively promote this program to their students and likely many of the applicants come from these schools as well. I have now attended a few schools during my time in college and never heard of this program through any of them. I found out about it when I was on the white house website.
