Help design mavens! New kitchen will have white cabinets, gray floor, slate appliances. Have to choose backsplash and wall colors. I like a tile that had black/whites/grays. The room next to it is yellow, so I’d rather stay away from it. Because of the design, the wall color will extend into the front hall. Suggestions?
What is the countr top?
Have you thought about a blue slate color?
I am not a design maven, but moved into an apartment that has a recently renovated kitchen with white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a tile backsplash with white, light gray, and darker gray glass tiles. The floor is wood parquet. The pantry cabinets (on one wall) are a light gray color. The window shades are also a light gray color.
I just checked the wall color: white. However, all the walls in our entire apartment are white, so no yellow walls are nearby.
I love blues with a neutral/natural palate (think sea and sky!) If you want a light color, maybe a robin’s egg blue. Something bolder could be deeper. It depends as well on how much light you have. Have you looked at the houzz site? We’ve used that for ideas in the past – tons of pictures. Eye candy!
I also used a terracotta orange in a room with neutrals, and it came out great. A little more statement, a little less timeless.
What about using a shade of grey for the wall color?
Are you someone who likes color? How is the light in the room? What is your style? Traditional? Contemporary? Farm house???
I find that a color that marries grey - so a blue-gray or green-gray - can be a bit of color but a bit of subtle.
I was also going to suggest a green-gray.
If you like a traditional look, go with marble backsplash. I saw many that had wonderful edging and designs. If you like modern, then use glass in shades of white to gray.
For,color, that yellow in nearby room leads me to a dove grey. Try both the blue and green hint to see if they clash with the yellow.
I’d fo some sort of burgundy with greys and whites. It would look elegant in the foyer and blend with the yellow. Doesn’t have to be dark.
If you want to consider a light, happy gray tone, check out Benjamin Moore Athena. It has a hint of green, enough color to contrast with white cabinets or trim, and is not dreary to live with.
Happy decorating!

I have a property with green-gray and I love that color. “Clivedon Gray Morning” (Valspar National Trust color)
I have another with gray-beige (greige) and I love that, too. The greige is called, “Woodrow Wilson’s Putty”. (Valspar National Trust color). I’m doing this one again. Very neutral.
another property has Valspar Tea Stain, but that may be too light for a white kitchen.
I use Benjamin Moore’s Decorator White for trim for everything.
“glass” from Devine sold at Rhodda Paints.
Subtle soft green gray that goes with anything.
My only concern with any shade of gray is its trendiness. Shades of gray are EVERYWHERE. It’s how beige used to be. My suggestion would be to pick something less “in” - stick to white, for example - or a pop of color that complements something else in your kitchen.
It’s only wall color. It can easily be changed. Try something and if you don’t like it, repaint. How much wall space is there to cover ?
I would pull the most prominent grey from the backsplash and make that your wall color; you’ll be amazed at how the backsplash will pop.
Unless you have coordinated accents in one color, then use a variation on the accent color on the wall.
I’m remodeling house at the moment and am faced with similar decisions. I’m going with pale gray walls, but I have wood floors and stainless appliances with white cabinets - so not as much gray as you. I’m still working on backsplash and counters (except island which is black walnut).
Given your gray floors and slate appliances, either a blue or green would look lovely. Grayed blues/greens will give you a softer look, while clearer colors (especially with black and white) will give a bolder, more graphic look. Just depends on what look you want to achieve.
If you want to keep it lighter and more neutral, a light gray with a slight blue or green undertone would look great next to the yellow room. The amount of lighting in your room will make a big difference in the result so get a few samples and try them out on your walls. If you go with a gray, try matching the undertones in the wall color to the existing floor/appliances. You can use pops of yellow in the kitchen to tie the two rooms together if they are open to one another.
Btw, I understand your dilemma. I just bought 4 samples of various shades of black paint just to get my doors the right shade!

Grey is trendy? Boy, I need to put our house on the market! Its 17 yr old greys should sell it quickly without me doing any extra work.
My vote is for bluish grey colors. Greens would not look good with yellow, IMO.
Thank you so much already.

Was in Lowe’s today for something else and saw this for the back splash. The dark gray pieces aren’t that dark.
