<p>Like for ban example. UVA reports their average act scores fall between 28-32. Do I need to be the fifty percentile ie 30? Or does the fact that I’m a white male mean I need to aim for higher percentiles so like a 31 or 32?</p>

Depends on the rest of your app, the weight the school assigns to the various elements compared to your strength in those elements, whether you’re desirable or undesirable for a slew of demographics, plus overall admission rates and your strength compared to the rest of the applicant pool.</p>
<p>Also depends on whether you’re asking, “do I have a decent chance of getting in here” or “do I have any chance of getting in here,” and what your cut points are for decent and any.</p>
<p>If all of your stats are in the middle of the accepted student range, you have a better chance compared to the average applicant. But statistics don’t work when applied to n=1.</p>
<p>It can also be hard to tell if the school has different admissions selectivity for different divisions or majors.</p>
<p>Depends on basically the rest of your application and the individual school. Also depends on what you want your chances of admission to be.</p>
<p>There is no way to answer this. Each application at any school will be judged in its own merits. While one applicant may get in with a test score that is higher than the 75th %ile, someone else may get in with a score in the mid 50%- there are of many other factors involved with admission that no one, not even an admissions officer, could answer such a vague question.</p>
