<p>Does anyone know where I can buy a white noise machine?</p>
<p>I actually want to go to a store and buy one, if possible — d is boarding at a local summer program and is having trouble sleeping, so I’d like to take her one today if I can.</p>
<p>I got a nice fan at Target that’s fairly quiet, would act like a white noise machine, and move the air around too. It’s a black plastic housing. The one I got was two fans in one unit, but they had some singles also.</p>

<p>Here are a few I found by googling. My son used to like the ones that had different sounds (falling rain, rushing streams, nature sounds, etc.) to choose from, not just the white noise. They’re very relaxing!</p>
<p>Unfortunately I don’t think you can get the ones at Target in the stores?</p>
<p>The Vornado fans work very well as white noise machines, and do double duty as great cooling devices.</p>
<p>I hope your daughter is in a private room. If not, she might want to discuss the noise machine with her roomie. They keep me AWAKE. The noise is just that to me…noise. If I had to share a room with someone using a noise machine <em>I</em> would not be able to sleep.</p>
<p>Well, if her roommate is keeping her up – she can always shut it off when everyone has gone to bed and it is quiet.</p>
<p>I bought one at Wal-Mart for under $20. It is 4”wX6”hX.5”d made by Conair with 10 different sounds.</p>

<p>There are clock radios that also have the sound; I believe Timex makes one. If you go to Target or Walmart you should be able to find something.</p>

<p>This is what we use in our home–it was purchased orginally from JC Penney. You might try their catalog/website. Otherwise, looks like you could order directly from this site. We have used this (Sleepmate) for years and love it!</p>

<p>It drives me crazy that you cannot look at a retailer’s web site and determine what is available in the store…</p>
<p>I agree that a white noise machine would render me (as a roommate) unable to sleep.</p>
<p>There are various iPhone apps that simulate either white noise or very soothing noises (rainforest, etc.) that might be effective, if worn with the earbuds (so as not to disturb the roommate). Don’t know if your child has an iPhone, but perhaps there are even podcasts / music casts of similar sounds on iTunes that your child could download to an iPod. I sympathize with your child’s problem (my D has sleep issues as well) but if there is a roommate, I think that the solution has to be some kind of white noise or soothing sound piped through earbuds / earphones.</p>
<p>fendrock, Yes……….I like it. I don’t use it every night but when H is overly tired he snores……….the soothing sounds helps me get to sleep.</p>

<p>I still think your solution really needs to be delivered through headphones of some sort to your own child, rather than assume the roommate wants to hear the white noise or soothing music / sounds. I would be very aggravated if a roommate wanted to use a white noise machine or soothing sounds and assumed that it wouldn’t disturb my sleep, too.</p>
<p>We use a white noise machine every night but unfortunately it came from the now defunct Sharper Image store. Anyway my H now snores so loudly that I am also using drugstore-purchased earplugs. They take some getting used (insides of ears feel sort of chafed) but they certainly work. I kind of feel like I’m in suspended animation or something and I tend to sleep in later in the morning. The kind I buy are pink and yellow. I’m told the just pink ones don’t work as well. My D is the one who turned me on to them as she wore them in her dorm room.</p>
