christopher, have u yourself even read “The Souls of Black Folks”, probably DuBois’s most famous piece of writing. The idea of whites proactively bringing up the African American race is NOT what he preaches. He has his Talented Tenth ideal. DuBois wants the top 10% of Blacks to rise up on their own, and then turn around, and extend a hand to the rest of the African American population, NOT be given free rides from rich white men.

Besides, what kind of accomplishment is breaking through the glass ceiling if in fact it is because someone is hitting it with a hammer from above?

Judaism isn’t a minority race, it’s a religion. Otherwise my race of Catholics would include people from China to South Africa to Parguay, and frankly that’s not what people would consider a ‘race’ (which shouldn’t matter - people should be judged as people, not colors)!

I have heard very, very intense discussions on this (I am Jewish, it is a hot topic). Hitler thought Judaism is a race. Maybe it is? Not really passed on genetically, not really anyway… although if your mom was jewish, then you ARE jewish, no matter what you want to be or think you are… there are certain diseases that are supposedly pertinent to the Jews… b/c of guetto conditions for several hundred years, passed down now by genes. Judaism is arguably A People. I don’t know about a race though…

Pyrrhus, seriously, get over it. I was a white, non-legacy, non-athlete, non-top 10% student who got in. If I posted my stats with URM next to it, everyone would assume that I must have been accepted because of my race. GET OVER IT!

Where are you going to college? Probably one of the top 20 schools in the country - yet you are still complaining about it. If you honestly feel the need to blame the school (and its policies and leaders) for your rejection, don’t do it on a public forum - you look petty.

tetrahedron, this is nothing to do with what anyone THINKS. i agree with you. but the jewish religion doesn’t. that is the fact. well, i guess, it also depends on the movement. the Reform movement says that if your dad is jewish, so are you. nonetheless, this is the law within the jewish religion (there are laws within it, like, keep shabbat, like keep kosher, like who is jewish, who is not. this goes under there. it is a part of Talmud; it is halacha).

I bet every Asian who got in is just as qualified as, if not more than, the whites who got in. Asians and Jews do have the highest national average SATs and GPAs. And in selective colleges, Asians have a harder time than whites in getting in. Trust me, you would rather be white than Asian when you apply to HYPSM.

Yeah, that would be great - so that you could be (probably) dirt poor living on a reservation somewhere since you were displaced by American frontiersman and mostly massacred just a century before.

Yeah asians have it worst. place where race is taken entirely out of the application - Berkeley forty-something percent asian. much more overrepresented at the top levels of academic achievement than whites. stop complaining about being white, the vast majority of seats at schools are reserved for you anyway. i could say i woulda gotten into harvard, yale and MIT if i was white and not asian. life is life. race-based AA should be abolished, just dont blame ur rejection on it.

good response hao- its the chinatown asians who get shafted in the deal. they are URMs who are not distinguished from their larger ethnic group. the ones who died making the transcontinental railroad. so why do hispanics get AA and they dont? what happened to hispanics, somebody tell me please.

lol…i haven’t been rejected YET so how can i blame anyone/anything?

and i wasn’t referring solely to college admissions…given the success of many asian immigrants/asian americans, it’s easy to forget that they’ve suffered as well and continue to be discriminated against today.

i know…add that to the fact that most having come from oppressive gov’ts, they are also the least politically active.

anonymous- yeah, i feel horrible for those chinatown asians. many of the ones i met were living well below the poverty line yet rarely is that taken into consideration.
