Whitewashed: good or bad?

Recently, ive noticed that some of my friends are calling each other "whitewashed."

Why does this carry a negative connotation? Isnt it just trying to assimilate into American Culture of Nike, McDonalds, and Xboxes? What is wrong with being Whitewashed?

Whitewashed is typically a term used for people who are not of the White race who have been influenced by affluent, white culture. It carries a negative connotation because they're not sticking to their heritage, so it makes them look off-color and different. Technically, it is saying that someone is assimilating with the American Culture, yes.

ironic. All the wangster kids I know are popular

^That's weird. haha.

Very weird. It's usually the "white" black people at my school. Kinda like me.

wangsters lawlz

I don't think being whitewashed is terrible either, I mean come on, America rocks! Go watch that shopping scene from Moscow on the Hudson if you need affirmation.
