Who administers the entire university?

Just curious, who runs the entire institution? I see many deans in each department but there doesn’t seem to be one that rules the entire college. Would that be the president of the school or administrative head? I would like to know what title that is and who that person would be.

I couldn’t find anything that answers my question regarding colleges. This is in general who would be the overall head of an institution.

The head of a university is called the President.

The day to day, Tom Sr. is correct. There may be a chancellor in lieu of President at some schools. They are the CEO.

At the department level, it’s the Dean. They are the subject matter experts and have a lot influence in the classroom and professorial ranks.

The real power is held by the board of trustees.

They don’t get involved in day to day decisions.

Officially, for most universities, it is either the president or the chancellor. However, everything they do must be OKed by the Board of Trustees.

There’s no consistent answer. There’s a president running the University of California system, and a chancellor runs each individual campus. For the California State University system, it’s the opposite. There is a chancellor overseeing the whole system, while there’s a president for each campus. Most of the private universities in California are run by a president.

So can any of the 10 Chancellors say NO to the President and the Board of Trustees?

For a profit-seeking business, I hardly see a business unit GM say NO to the President under normal circumstance. Of course, there are many teachings out there to teach you say NO the right way…

Sure, they can say NO. Doesn’t meant the president and the Board of Trustees has to listen to them, though.
