Who are the big name professors at Harvard?

and what department is each one in?

The big name ones aren’t necessarily the good ones

In African and African-American Studies, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (chair).

Thomas Forrest Kelly in Music; Howard Zinn in History.

I’m not sure why it’s important to learn who the big name profs are… a lot of time they are so absorbed in their research that they barely interact with students. just b/c they’re well-known in their field doesn’t mean they’re committed to teaching undergrads. for instance, alexander wolszczan, an astro prof @ psu, was the first to discover a planet outside of the solar system (is on a stamp in his native poland and everything, in a series that includes copernicus), but I’ve heard bad things about his teaching.

Howard Zinn is a professor emeritus at Boston University…alot of people have the misconception he’s from Harvard

Robert Levin in music

But really be open-minded when you get there. This should definitely not affect your course selections. . . .

Thanks, Wham-BAM.

Howard Zinn… brings back bad memories from my last year’s history class!

was he on the daily show recently?

He’s an important historian, but he can be sloppy with facts. I found a substantial untruth about Nixon (totally unsubstantiated in the text, too) in the People’s History of the US. It troubles me enough that I think I’m going to write him a letter.

Here’s an interesting question: Where did the big name professors at Harvard do their undergradute work?

Often at not-so-well-known places, where they stand out and hone their research skills under the guidance of amazing scholars. Great state univ.'s are common, ie Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, Mass-Amherst, Iowa, Washington.

Any link to support that claim, fiddlefrog?

in English, Homi K. Bhaba and Stephen Greenblatt

It’s true that a lot studied at non- Ivys and non big name schools. Here’s the english faculty list:

http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~english/people/facultyprofiles.html

a lot did go to ivys, but there’s a fair amount who didn’t… people who went to Iowa, michigan, virginia…

Michigan is an excellent school, littlelouise. it is ivy-caliber in several disciplines, it is ivy-caliber or better.

Mankiw is at Harvard.

Mankiw is the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Shudders when he hears his name.

Btw, Joseph Nye, was the ex-dean of the Kennedy School of Government. Too bad he is on leave now. But he has written some amazing books on hard and soft power.

Mankiw is my hero!

too bad his trickle down Reagonimics failed
