It is said that the custom of shaking hands originated when primitive men held out empty hands to indicate that they had no _____ weapons and were thus _____ disposed.

A) lethal…clearly
B) concealed…amicably
C) hidden…harmfully
D) murderous…ill
E) secret…finally

I say B. Why just lethal weapons? I wouldn’t want a stranger to be brandishing a stick when I first met them (although I guess one could argue that a stick is a lethal weapon).

Key words are “empty hands” You can have lethal weapons elsewhere on your body and still stretch you empty hands out. The point is to show that you are not hiding anything in your hands. Plus, the word “clearly” in A doesnt make sense in context. What clear disposition? What if his intention is to kill the handshaker? It might still be a pretty clear disposition. Amicable attitude goes hand in hand with absence of concealed weapons.

To finish this, plug in A and read it “men held out empty hands to indicate that they had no lethal weapons and were thus clearly disposed”. What if the hands had non-lethal weapons? Would the disposition still be clear??? Whats a non-lethal weapon? Short knife? Tiny baseball bat?

Everyone got it right, the answer is B. I don’t see how clearly disposed doesn’t make sense though. Disposed means “prepared to take risks” and “clearly prepared to take risks” is a logical statement.

“the predominant or prevailing tendency of one’s spirits; natural mental and emotional outlook or mood; characteristic attitude: a girl with a pleasant disposition.
2.
state of mind regarding something; inclination: a disposition to gamble.”

Chenryy, considering your definition of “disposed”, wouldn’t you say that B makes fits better than A? Empty hands probably imply that a person has nothing to hide and doesn’t really say that a person doesn’t have lethal weapons.
