I love how it’s only December and I’m freaking out about my summer. While it is of my utmost interest to have a research internship for 7-8 weeks, whether it be with a professor or organized program, I also want to do journalism and forensics speech camps. And it’s incredibly annoying because the journalism/speech camps are generally easy to get into, but they all coincide with my research internship, which sucks up the entire month of July. Oh well…

I am.but unlike you I can’t shell of a lot of money for speech camps and I don’t have a research oppurtunity lined up. So, I have to apply to all these summer programs and hope I get in.But, yes , I agree worrying about what to do the summer of junior year is incredibly stressful. Good luck
I am so tired.

Heyy! I’m not “lined up” for anything. I mean, I have very good credentials but I’m not sure if that’ll be enough. And regardless, these speech/journalism camps are only going to be about 1 week long, or less, so they’re only a few hundred dollars. But I know what you mean…
think of all the teacher recs we have to get. They won’t like us anymore after we ask them to write fill out like 10 recs for all these random programs. Haha.

^haha. Exactly. I’m worried about my teacher recs because I don’t want to stress them out as well.

I 'm laughing too. Yeah, I’m wondering how to approach that question. Should they write one, semi-impersonal letter and change the words round.Yikes. I’m scared to ask. stoompy , are you applying to that RSI thing?
Even worse by the time college recs roll around
Teachers: get in the closet now ! there’s nil looking for another reccomendation!

@stoompy,
I think you might be able to do a program AND a research internship if the programs are only a week long. I went to a 2-week program in the middle of my research internship this past summer. Time permitted it, but I also worked from mid-June to the end of August.

and also, will teachers get annoyed if I ask the same ones for 2-3 recs? at different times? haha I hope not. I think math/science teachers in particular have it hard, because all the programs that require recs from them…

Do you think you can just use the same recs but change the wording around?

well, if the recs are just letters, then that should be fine. but alot of summer camp recs have specific forms that need to be filled out.

Woah. I can just leave for a week or so?
I would be required to work the maximum 40 hours a week though, right?

did you just contact a professor and ask for an internship, or was this through some program? I just told my professor I had this camp, and if it would be ok to take those weeks off. Whatever I was working on could wait (I had just started), so it was fine.
I didn’t get paid during mine, but even if you do, I would assume its like taking a week off…

I’m going to try to apply/contact both options. So depending on which one I’m actually going to do… the professor would probably be more lenient? It wouldn’t be possible to leave for a week with a program, would it? :
