In the link I gave above, there is an interview with the stylist who refused to do this and who tried to talk her out of it. Apparently Spears began to shave her head when the stylist was speaking to her bodyguard. Thre is also a part that claims that Spears said that she did this because she was tired of being touched.

Thanks b…I must have been typing while you were posting. (I don’t blame the stylist for balking btw!) I agree with some of what the psychologists in the article are saying; but I think it’s a dangerous assumption that Britney is strong enough to take a stand and symbolically declare a fresh start. I, like you, think she is in serious trouble. And when a ‘mom’ is in trouble, so are her children.

The problem isn’t that we can’t answer those questions, it’s that she couldn’t get 2 out of 3 either.

This young lady gets no sympathy from me because of her unwarranted and unfortunate celebrity, but she does get my sympathy for being mentally unhinged. In my world an ex-husband would have called Children’s Protective and a case would have already been instituted. I’ve seen a CPS case file opened for a lot less. A whole lot less.

The interview with the hairdresser was spooky. The “people touching me” excuse was just too bizarre. I don’t watch e-tainment news but this crap was on CNN overnight.

I don’t think there is much that Britney’s mom can do. Britney is over 21. I think she’s having some king of nervous breakdown, possibly brought on by post partum depression and her divorce.

I feel bad for her. I think she needs a good psychiatrist rather than rehab.

The problem with the ex-husband is ‘allegedly’ the reason Britney served him divorce papers was because of his habit of bringing drug dealers into their home. If that is true, I can see where he would not step up and cause law enforcement/CPS to have reason to look into his activities.

curmudgeon is right…it’s hard to escape this, and the Anna Nicole debacle, when even CNN is giving both such heavy coverage.

I admit I have not really followed Britney much through her career. but ( some)people in the public eye, seem to want to stay in public eye, and didn’t she say her role model was Madonna?
Something really out there was necessary for us to keep talking about her- shaving her head seemed to have done the trick.

But she also seems to be exhausted which I can sympathize with. Going through a divorce with young children would be overwhelming for many people.

It isn’t uncommon for people to go through an appearance change with a breakup- usually women just cut their hair though.
but it will grow back.

I think you guys are all reading too much into this. It looks to me like she shaved her head solely for publicity, same reason she flashed her vagina to the photographers, kissed Madonna on the lips and married her high school boyfriend in Vegas for a few hours. It keeps her in the headlines. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the reason she had kids, too.

What do you suppose she’s going to do to top this once the uproar dies down?

I am going to weigh in on the side that this gal is imploding live in front of everyone… I think that her brain is fried from alcohol and drugs… that I think she is still emotionally a child… my reaction to the head shaving…after leaving a rehab is that she may be in a bit of a DT situation… that fact that she is talking about not wanting anyone to touch her anymore… seems to me that she is completely paranoid… almost halucinating… I don’t know what drugs she does, but folks on meth definitely do destructive things and shaving your head bald in the middle of the night is destructive. The guy she was recently seeing was quoted in an interview as saying when she was engaged in sex, she was fine…the moment the sex ended, she was a confused, tearful person. I sense a serious serotonin malfunction myself. This is almost like she is acting out all the roles from Valley of the Dolls herself. Ugh…

I think we should assume her parents and others are trying to help her, but as someone else mentioned, she is over 21 and cannot be committed unless she is a danger to herself. Actually shaving her head might be seen by a court as a danger … asking strangers in a hotel to take care of her children might be seen as dangerous for the minor children…

I personally have found this specific Britney situation to be very unsettling because I think most of us know that the media will peck anyone to death in their pursuit of news/gossip/innuendo etc. The media loves exhibitionists and someone under the influence of anything is an easy target (ie Anna Nicole.)

I find it interesting that Justin Timberlake has used some of his own press time to shout out to Britney to slow down…and a former assistant has also expressed real concern that they have tried everything.

This is classic substance abuse/mental illness/addiction (sex?) and the gal needs help…hopefully her bottom won’t be death. IMHO…

So true, mainparent. The phrase “peck anyone to death” is so apt. It wasn’t many years ago that my daughter was wanting to go to Britney concerts. I wonder what the younger generation is making of all of this.

or at least the fan bases’s parents who actually pay for the cd’s, posters & concert tickets…all the tweenies, and very young teen girls who adored her in past years have outgrown her (D’s younger friends all think Britney’s a big joke now, “stupid” at best or “gross” at worst.) The younger girls would still follow her except parents refuse to buy her stuff for their little girls–how could you financially support someone who so publicly goes off the deep end. I don’t know if it’s a cry for help or a cry for attention…could be both. The big lesson Britney’s learning here is that motherhood changes everything.Don’t think she was ready for losing the limelight.

I don’t buy into this acting out as an insatiable need for attention. The girl is hounded by press at all times. This sort of pressure and attention is enough to make the strongest crack. After viewing some of the videos, I’ve come to the conclusion that the paparazzi are just a bunch of vermin. I’m sorry I looked at them; since that makes me part of the problem too.

I’m not a Britney fan and I steered my daughter far, far away from her music and images back when she was so influential with teen girls. But I do feel sorry for her.

(mini - you are a Pink Warrior’s doll…bless your heart! My mom just got her wigs this week. Her best friend bought matching wigs and they are having quite a time of it.)

berurah, I wasn’t saying that there would be no effect or repercussions on her children due to her obviously disturbing behavior. My point was that her situation is not unique, that there are probably thousands upon thousands of mothers out there who exhibit similarly disturbing behavior or worse. The unique aspect of this case is that the paparazzi are around to capture it for Entertainment Tonight. And I’ve learned over the years, from experience, that we cannot always believe every detail of what we see and/or read in the ‘news’. That was why I said that none of us actually knows exactly what is going on in this girl’s life on a day to day basis.

She certainly appears to be someone who could use some help with the way she is conducting her life, but again, so could many others. Diagnosing behavior via news clips and second and third hand interviews isn’t productive, or wise. This is one reason that celebrity and fame, and the resulting fascination, are so interesting. It’s a similar situation with the Anna Nicole Smith case. The public is engaged, appalled, interested, and is ready to weigh in with explanations as to how this girl’s sad life unravelled, when really we only actually know snippets of what occurred in her 39 years. We, meaning the general public, want to know what goes on in the lives of celebrities, both the good and the bad, and we love to feel that we could help them or solve their problems, or know what’s best. Generally speaking, the public isn’t at all as interested in people who may live in their neighborhoods who have similar problems, and where they may actually be able to have a positive effect in helping someone. Human behavior is pretty fascinating ‘stuff’. :)

Alwaysamom…
you raise a very valid point…but just as a sideline…I have laughed in the past and said it was easier to gossip about celebrities than real folks in our real life circle of life…because one cannot get into trouble gossiping about celebrities and one can get into gossiping about friends/acquaintances. I am definitely speculating in my comments about Britney…and I can honestly say that the primary reason I posted about it today was because the thread spoke to the “angst” I felt after first seeing the stories about this meltdown.
I think I was also sad that folks think she is doing this for attention… maybe she is… but my gut says it is a much deeper problem then that…

as a society we just cannot set rules about how to parent…nor about how to live…without infringing on rights…

this is not unlike the poster last year who claimed he could control his drinking and died of alcohol poisoning… there is something just a touch off but we can’t own it… maybe we just say a prayer and try to use it as a teaching point? the classic great highs, great lows? give me middle ground!!

“(mini - you are a Pink Warrior’s doll…bless your heart! My mom just got her wigs this week. Her best friend bought matching wigs and they are having quite a time of it.)”

Wife got a wig. Wore it once. Threw it away. She thought she needed it for work. She is a hospice nurse, and half the patients can’t see her, and the other half don’t care.

Does anyone wonder if it was more calculated than all that? If she was possibly trying to circumvent drug testing that might arise in a child custody dispute?

lol! mini. Ya know my mom was thinking the same thing. She’s a recovery room nurse, so all her patients are asleep or gorked…and not really gonna be offering hair opinions. But I think she was looking forward to ‘thick’ hair which she has never had. So for now the wigs are a go. She also bought dramatic scarves; and ldgirl bought her a Carolina Blue fan wig which she promises to wear to work if UNC makes Final Four. (Mom was a basketball player back in the day…so she’s almost as obsessed as I am.)

I think she’ll look lovely with blue hair, what do you think? Blue will go great with her scrubs. ;)
