I’m game. I have several of those in my home, so will try them. Thanks!!!
This is the first for me as well. I feel mad about that! I am recovering nicely, the cough is almost gone, and thankfully the razors are out of my throat!
I’ll guinea pig all the home remedies and hacks for getting taste/smell to return!
I spent the last 30 minutes gathering items around the house to try to smell. Currently these are items I can smell, some more faintly than others - curry is strong! I can really smell it.
My current arsenal! I need something floral. I don’t wear perfume so that’s out. My one bar of unopened lavender soap was a no.
I feel like I’m in an escape room with MacGyver!
I bought some Amazon essential oils and made smelling jars—piece of watercolor paper on the bottom and then put a few drops of oil on the paper. I try to smell it whenever I remember. Originally I tried smelling it at least 2x/day.
Now I smell them less often.
I lost my sense of smell when I had infections in late 1980s, when I was pregnant. I can smell a bit nowadays, but not very much still. It’s muted, like when folks have a heavy cold.
My husband had an infection just before covid was in the news and has not yet fully recovered his sense of smell. There was no test he could get back then to see if he had covid and no treatments. He used to have a very acute sense of smell.
We both miss the ability to smell.
So you have been without a sense of smell for 30+ years?? And your H for a couple years?? If so have you inquired with a doc how to try to restore it?
Food is too important to me not to try and remedy a smelling issue!
I had a really weird experience maybe 20 years ago. We were in Kmart and H thrust something under my nose and said “smell this.” He was always doing that then (and irritating me). But I thought this time he was joking. He wasn’t. It was a Xmas scented candle and I smelled nothing at all. It was as if it didn’t exist. But I wasn’t sick, hadn’t been sick, and wasn’t congested at all. Freaky. Don’t remember when it came back. It didn’t scare me enough at the time. I had enough in those days to worry about.
2 weeks before I got covid, I had a cold/sinus infection. Once it turned into the infection, I lost it which is common. Came back once the congestion was gone. With covid, it was mostly muted for 1-2 days.
These reports of lost sense of taste and smell is so interesting! That symptom seemed to disappear after the first year or so.
Hmmm, seems like something to report somewhere!
The first time I had COVID, years ago, I didn’t lose my sense of smell. Earlier this year, at my second round, I did.
I initially thought it was related to the variant. It’s hard to say though as different people seem to react differently.
I have been to several allergists and ENTs. They have had no suggestions other than optimally treat allergies. H has also been to several specialists and also no suggestions or help, other than optimally treat allergies.
Yes, smell and taste are important and missed but one has to make peace with what cannot be changed.
We weren’t even told about the idea of making a smelling kit to train our noses until reading about it after many said they lost their sense of smell after covid. That’s when I made the scent kits. Two of my nieces also can’t smell much of at all.
I use the little Bonne Marmon preserves jars from advent calendar for smelling kit. They are better for sealing than glass baby food jars. Just added a bit more oils to each jar in scent kit to refresh.
If anyone has some great cure for loss of smell, I’m very interested. The scent kit is the best I’ve read of so far. I’m grateful I have at least a muted sense of taste and smell.
My H had an altered sense of smell and taste after a chemical spill in the lab where he worked. It took a very long time (more than a year) for it to return to normal, but it eventually did. I feel bad for all of you dealing with loss of smell/taste, because I remember how frustrating it was for H.
A visit to a neurologist might be very helpful in regards to smell/taste loss. Neuro-feedback might also be something to consider.
Totally agree. Also, I have a friend who researches smell/taste loss and treats patients (allergist). @HImom where do you live? Feel free to DM me.
Argh, positive for the third time. Virtual urgent care visit at 3 to discuss Paxlovid.
Thanks for the thought about possibly seeing a neurologist. That was never suggested. I live in Oahu, in an east side suburb of Honolulu.
My gosh, you poor thing!
@HImom - I’ll ask my friend for any referrals near you -
Not sure if it’s a great cure or not but my spouse walked into a candle/ soap shop that was heavy with multiple smells. All of a sudden felt nose start tingling and burning. Had to walk out of the shop. After that could smell again.
I’ve heard Yankee Candles are overwhelming - wonder if there’s any near me!
I am sorry. Hope it’s a mild case. Take good care.
