I am going to Asia in October. I had Covid in April. I am hoping to be able to get a new vaccine before I go.
Thanks, all. Symptoms under control with otc meds (and a little bit of edibles). Paxlovid to be delivered from Walgreens via UberEats. Eating Breyers Mango light ice cream now while I can still taste without Paxlovid taste.
ETA: Paxlovid free in NYS. Delivery on me but cāest la vie.
Paxlovid was like a miracle drug the 2nd time I got covid, wishing the same for you.
Thanks. It worked in 5/22 and 11/23! No rebound.
I defeated the taste! Put each pill in a big spoonful of yogurt and swallow. Use listerine strips after each time you take the pills.
My solution is to take it after I first eat in the day, and then after Iām done eating for the day.
Havenāt responded to this in a while. Still (knock on wood) no Covid ever- even being around those that have had it. No vax either. Never had chicken pox as well even though I shared a room with siblings who had it bad growing up.
I will say while not related- my sense of smell has always been heightened to a semi annoying rate. I canāt deal with overly sented candles and I can not ride in a car with someone wearing strong scents (like my teen son and his obsessed use of cologne). I immediately get a headache.
Hope everyone who has it recovers quickly!
Eric Topol writes about the state of COVID-19:
I had seen this article. What stood out is the following
" The investment of the US for Project NextGen has been minimal to develop nasal vaccines with only 2 programs supported and itās moving quite slowly. I donāt understand why the Washington University nasal vaccine is not being assessed in the US, including regulatory guidance and oversight. And there are many other candidates from academic labs at Mt. Sinai, Emory ,Yale and others. What a missed opportunity.ā
Looks like not much is happening in the way of additional vaccine type protections. Like weāve all collectively already forgotten what was missing when this started, what was underfunded or non existentā¦same as it ever was.
Has anyone ever heard of covid mental delirium? A relative with dementia, we are told, had this as their only symptom when they had COVID recently.
Iāve heard of covid brain fogārelated, but not mental delirium.
The latest TWIV has a lot of great info on long covid. The episode is an interview with a Swedish scientist studying ling covid and was easier for me to follow than some other TWIV episodes.
One takeaway: two populations are more likely to get long covid, hospitalized men, and nonhospitalized young women. Thereās evidence of covid affecting the immune system as a cause of Long Covid, but also of viral persistence. As a result thereās an ongoing study of giving these patients antivirals (15 days of paxlovid). Thereās more, but those were my takeaways.
Has there been more info about when the new vaccines will be out? I have a few trips over the next few weeks and itās been a year since my last vaccine. Wondering whether to get another (old) vaccine now or wait for the updated one.
Hereās what I found in quick search.
When will the 2024 COVID vaccine be released?
The new 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccines will come out in August and September, and health experts hope a much higher percentage of Americans will decide to get an annual COVID-19 vaccine this fall and winter than did last year since vaccines protect well against hospitalization and death.Jul 1, 2024

Hi, thank you. I did see those. Was just thinking that, now that itās August, there might be a better estimate of the date. So⦠if theyāll perhaps be avail later in August then Iāll probably wait.
Thanks for the info. We have a foreign trip starting in mid-September and were hoping to get our next booster by then. We will see what we can do.
About 1.5 years ago, D1 developed worrisome symptoms which were eventually diagnosed as Graves disease, a condition which involves the thyroid producing excess thyroid hormones. She was treated with medications and responded very well. Eventually they did a trial of weaning the meds, and she remained in remission. About July 10, she got her second Covid infection. Last week, her Graves symptoms returned, and she is back on meds. Of course this is very concerning to me, as Graves can really wreak havoc on the body, notably the heart. Her symptoms were evidence that her heart was struggling to deal with the excess thyroid hormones. I just googled ārelationship between Graves disease and Covid 19 infectionā and learned that in those who may be genetically predisposed to Graves, infections, and specifically Covid, can be the catalyst to the genetic predisposition being actually expressed. What I donāt remember is if she initially developed Graves before or after her first Covid infection.
Anyone who has a family history of autoimmune diseases should have your antennae activated if you get Covid or any other other febrile/viral infection. If you subsequently develop odd symptoms, you should see your doctor or get a referral to an endocrinologist or rheumatologist.
Viruses can definitely result in unexpected health issues. My brother was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes not too long after he had two childhood diseases at the same time (I think it was measles & mumps). The pediatrician said that he was genetically predisposed & the virus combination flipped the genetic switch.
I hope that your D is doing okay. My friendās S was diagnosed with Gravesā disease when he was in pharmacy school, and he went through a lot. Heās good now, thank goodness.
H got Graveās disease in his 60ās, older male- unusual. He did have some sort of food poisoning a few weeks before we think was its onset. The onset was not so clear. His endocrinologist said it usually is switched on by an infection.
I since found out several of my friends had had Graveās in the past- not related to covid. More common than I thought. H is fine - just takes thyroid replacement after his radioactive iodine treatment in 2015.
I suspect a lot of us are prone to some kind of autoimmune disease and just donāt realize it.
I have Graves pre-covid. Not sure what brought it on. (I will secretly admit that I did enjoy the weight loss). I went on meds and after 6 months was weaned and have been fine since.
