Who I could complain to?

So I’m not sure this is where I’d get the best answers for this, but this place tends to have people who know just about everything, so I thought I’d give it a try.

So I’ve had a lot of issues with Emory’s financial aid office. Not only did they mess up my files (multiple times), but when I tried to talk to them and ask them about it, they were really really rude, and unhelpful, and acted like it was somehow my fault they lost or misread my files. Actually, the continuous conflicts with them were part of the reason I decided I’d rather not go there. I really don’t want to have to deal with this every time I need financial assistance with anything, and the school I did decide on was so nice about financial aid; talking to me about any questions I had, and trying to make sure they did all they could to help me afford college. Emory’s aid office just didn’t seem to care what happened to admitted students, and it really put me off the school.

I also found out that its not just me, that a lot of people have problems with the office, and I think I should say something to Emory about it, because it wasn’t just that they were a little unhelpful or disorganized, but that they were just total and complete jerks. So any ideas who it might be useful to talk to this about?

Sorry it was a bit long, I’m not trying to whine to you guys, just letting explaining that it wasn’t just me overreacting to someone being a little rude, I really do think something should be done about the way they act.

Even though admission and financial aid are totally separate, you might try Jean Jordan, Dean of Admissions… jean.jordan@emory.edu. She’s nice, approachable, and actually cares a lot.

If you’re more bold, you might also email the President of the University, James Wagner at James.Wagner@emory.edu. He’s incredibly concerned with the undergraduate experience and even has office hours for student concerns each week. I think if you were a current student, going up this high might be inappropriate without speaking to Dean Jordan or someone else first, but if you have no plans on coming to Emory, it might make you feel better to email him as well.

I have heard frustrating things about the financial aide office from other people, but if it makes you feel better, my experiences with most every other office has been outstanding. I’ve found the staff extraordinarily conscientious in my four years here.

Sounds like a mostly isolated incident I’ve called and visit financial aide and they seemed really genuine and acted like they cared the one guy walked me through how to appeal my aide package and seemed sad that I was struggling to find money to pay he gave me his number and wanted me to call and he actually called me to congratulate me on my deposit since he found out. They aren’t that bad, some people have bad days and make mistakes. Realize it’s their job to put up with fickle kids like us I’d get ticked after awhile too.

financial aid was mean to me when I called but they gave me 6k more when i appealed so its all good they were playing good cop bad cop

i agree with the OP. ive been having problems with my deposit. ive sent in a check through certified mail and ive asked multiple times if they’ve received it but all ive gotten is “not yet. we received lots of mail recently.” the may 1st deadline is approaching and i NEED to know if they’ve received my deposit.

spaz:

check your bank online (if you can). You’ll be able to see when the check clears, which should only take a few days from being deposited in an Atlanta bank.

OP: I would suggest you let it go and enjoy your new college. There is no reason to burn bridges or make an issue out of it. You never know who will be where when/if you apply to grad school. You could send a letter to the Dean of Admissions and just let her know that you’ve chosen another school due to a better financial aid pkg, altho if it was merit money at a lower-ranked school they will probably just wish you well.

I called in twice. First time I had a really nice lady. Second time…the person who assisted me was pretty rude and unhelpful. What is really annoying is that they keep asking me for new materials every time I send in the documents they ask for. Also…I don’t know how do they didn’t receive something I sent in via priority mail with confirmation…
