<p>the only person I know who won a Fulbright- ( senior scholar award- he has also won a Guggenheim) already was a professor at a major university so that probably isn’t what you are looking for</p>
<p>However- Ds school did have a very helpful page on how to apply for a Rhodes or Watson fellowship, are they similar?

<p>Thanks Kitty - Watson scholarships are made available by the founder of IBM. I think they are only available at certain schools - I know Pomona has them. One might also need to be a child of an IBM employee.</p>
<p>I think a Rhodes recipient has to excel in a sport, a music or art, and academically. Clinton was a Rhodes scholar. Those are the most prestigious and hardest to get.</p>

<p>Niece’s spouse got a Fulbright. I don’t know the particulars other than he had a job, masters from UP, undergrad from UF Miami, IB. Multilingual. Niece went with him. </p>
<p>One year Fulbright. Stipend. Attended seminars at local University. Extensive travel. Meet a lot of people. A paper is not required on completion. Everything that Phyllis Shafly & others, said about BJC. </p>
<p>Basically an student exchange program. Funded by Department of State and host country. </p>
<p>My sister’s ex’s, brother, who also was a classmate of mine, got a Rhodes. Very smart and intelligent. His HS gpa was mediocre, marginal in college, eventually got a MD. Personal life a mess.</p>

<p>D was all set to apply two years ago but went for PhD admission instead.What is it you need to know?
Theres usually an office of special scholarships or some such on a students campus to help them apply. Application is long and fairly intricate. sponsors are needed from the host country…you pick a place to apply to and they sponsor you.Depending on what you want to do theres tricks for different study areas…like what country to partial to what area of study.D was looking to go to Finland for music history.Sometimes language knowledge is a factor.</p>

Its that office of scholarship and research (or whatever its called on the campus) that will help the student determine how to craft their research proposal,who to contact in what country and know where that particular school has had successful placements. Alumni can work through those offices as well. These offices have become more sophisticated and are staffed professionally now that winning placements has become a “countable” statistic for admissions boasting purposes.</p>

<p>Around 25 years ago, my cousin (Harvard man and newly “out” in the gay community of San Francisco) worked up 3 different Fulbright proposals. What surprised me was which one was accepted, and which rejected (or perhaps he just didn’t pursue…not sure…but figure he had good advice). </p>
<p>Put your mind back to the mid-1980’s with the first wave of deaths due to AIDS in this country, so he was right on top of that tragedy.
The rejected (or aborted) proposal: how the gay community in SF had become the first safe-sex community in America, reversing behavior patterns 180 degrees, in response to the deaths. (research was relevant to encouraging safe sex and health).</p>
<p>Accepted proposal: The use of imagination by Brazilian transvestites to cope with social rejection. Research was conducted in tattoo parlors and in the costume-sewing studios that outfitted the stage-performing nightclub transvestites. My cousin interviewed them in those locations (fluent in Portugese).</p>
<p>If you can make any sense of that for your purposes, you’re a better woman than I…</p>
<p>As my son speaks Portuguese and lived in Brazil it sounds cool. I’m a little kinky so he knows from transvestites. No kidding. I’ll show him your post. Have to do it someway so he doesn’t know it is coming from me or he will automatically hate it. </p>
