I’m not majoring music, but I am interested in minoring in it. I want to minor in violin. Is it even possible for me? [USC Thornton School of Music : Academic Programs: Strings](http://www.usc.edu/schools/music/programs/strings/index.html)
On the website, it says Thornton offers a MM degree for Strings. Does anyone know what it is? It’s 30 units…seems like it is a minor. Thank you!!!

That would be a Master of Music, a graduate degree. Shinywing, the website has information about music minors. Look again. It’s under “options for non music majors.”

I’ve already looked over it, but it seems like it doesn’t offer any minor degree for instruments like Strings :(

I’m so sorry for my ignorance and lack of knowledge…but is Musical Studies the same as a study of a particular type of instrument?
“Minor in Musical Studies
In addition to the Application for a Minor in Music (see above), a performance audition is required of applicants to this program. Two selections from the standard repertoire of their primary instrument or voice should be prepared for the audition. To schedule an audition or for further information, contact the appropriate music department (e.g. pianists contact the department of keyboard studies, flutists contact the department of winds and percussion, etc.). The minor is not available to music majors.”

Yes, you are exactly right. The Minor in Musical Studies is what you would choose for the “minor in violin” you have described. You audition with the instrument of your choice - in your case, violin. The minor is 26 units, and 6 of the units are individual instruction in your instrument (violin).

I would encourage you to go to Thornton and ask about it - they are VERY nice and VERY welcoming. Non-majors can also take music performance courses and individual instruction without declaring a music minor, so if it turns out the other courses for the minor do not interest you, that is an option.

Here are the minor requirements:

Edit: Here is a useful brochure http://www.usc.edu/schools/music/private/docs/academic/minors/2010_Minors__Electives.pdf

Haha! Cross posted w/jsm - And we were thinking the same thoughts!

It seems as though the Minor in Musical Studies can be with an emphasis in whatever instrument you choose (as in your "primary instrument), including a strings instrument. I’m guessing that they want your audition to include the types of standards for your instrument that are required for music majors in that same instrument (so you can look there to see what pieces they’re talking about). I would call Thornton for more specific information.

Here is a list of all the music minors available at Thornton:

Posted at the same time as ALAMEMOM!

Thank you so MUCH !!!
By the way, jazz/shreddermom, do you mean that they expect me to be as skilled as the ppl who are music majors? I’m not very skilled at violin …I have only played for about 3-4 years…

shinywing, I seriously doubt they would hold you to same standard as the majors. That would make no sense! I’m just interpreting the information on the website to mean that if there’s an audition required, they want you to see the major’s guidelines. But call to make sure!
