Older son will be attending grad school at Xavier University in the Fall and is wondering about different neighborhoods, etc., to live in. I’m sure someone here knows the City. Advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Haven’t been there since 1979, but eat Cincinnati chili!

I just learned about the chili today!!

Ask me in 2 weeks. I’m running a marathon there!

Cinci is one of favorite cities - tho I can cook a far better Skyline Chili clone than Skyline :).

Faves include IKEA, Jungle Jim’s if you’re a foodie, and a bit further north, WPAFB Air Force Museum and Parts Express.

If he has a car and does not mind the drive, I’d vote for living right across the river in Newport/Covington KY. Some very nice places with great views and pretty quiet.

I’ve been to Covington and it’s lovely. (At least, the office building where I spent the day seemed fine.) But is that where “it’s happening” after hours and on the weekends?? Is there where someone young and hip would want to live??

He should check out Hyde Park or Mt. Lookout. Apartments might be a bit pricier there, but they are great neighborhoods, each with a “square” that has restaurants and bars. Might also want to check out the Gaslight area of Clifton.

MOWC, I think you’ll love running the Flying Pig. It’s pretty hilly though!

OK, sorry for the multiple posts, but Mt. Adams would be AWESOME, but it’s definitely pricey. Not sure if a grad student could afford something up there. (He could also look in Eden Park - close to Mt. Adams.)

What is the name of the neighborhood that Xavier is in?

It’s sort of in the middle of 3: Norwood, Evanston (can be dicey), and North Avondale. It’s fairly close to Hyde Park.

Here is a link to a map of neighborhoods. Oakley would also be worth a look. (Sorry, I know this is a lot of info. Feel free to PM me if you want.)
My brother lived in Mt. Lookout - so nice! Beautiful park at the top of his street, cant remember the name of it… And Hyde Park is right next door. Your son would be safe and happy in either.
Skyline Chili, Graeters Ice Cream, yum.

suzy100, that map is helpful; thanks.

Safe and happy is what we’re after!!

Oakley is an affordable and up and coming area for young people, and not far from Norwood (it’s just north of Hyde Park which is across the freeway from Norwood.

I live in Cincinnati, so ask away VeryHappy. All the areas mentioned so far are excellent ones.

MomofWildChild - you will run through Hyde Park at about the halfway point of the marathon. I am part of the cycling support team for the Flying Pig, so look for me on my blue bike with pig ears sticking out of my helmet.

ldavis - you are thinking of Ault Park. I agree, it is beautiful.

We just discovered a great wood-fired pizza place, Betta’s, on Montgomery Rd. near Xavier. And the university itself is building a new area where students can shop & eat. Welcome to the 21st century! ;)

I have no idea but students may very well live in the southern part of Norwood which is next to campus. It’s certainly affordable! I am more familiar with the dorms on campus, for undergrads.

Yes, Ault Park… thank you! It was driving me crazy… just beautiful.

I lived about an hour north of Cincinnati (south Dayton area) so I can’t comment on the Xavier area neighborhoods, but I can comment on the Cincinnati cuisine. Which starts and ends with Skyline Chili. My family lives in Florida, but we still buy the frozen chili packages as well as make it from scratch religiously. Also try Montgomery Inn. Seriously the best ribs ever. And if you have a sweet tooth, make sure to try Graeter’s Ice Cream, which has several locations throughout the area. Esther Price makes the best gourmet chocolates as well. And if you like potato chips, Mike-Sells is the best brand to buy at any area grocery store.

Man, I need to go back to Ohio for a quick junk food vacation.

Sounds like Ohio is quite the junk-food capital. Huh. Who knew.
