i understand that capitalization can be used for EMPHASIS in the same way that bold does. otherwise i feel that capitalization is another one of those useless conventions that doesn’t translate into meaning. only that it is sometimes used as an indicator of social status - in that some people think that people who don’t capitalize are uncultured or something.

on the other hand word auto-capitalizes new sentences. typing seems to be faster when you don’t try to capitalize things

“who needs capitalization of new sentences?”

UGGGGHHHSHHSD. Meeeee. InquilineKea, pleaseohplease use capitals again! I actually do think that capitals have a use… it more clearly distinguishes between sentences (marks the beginning of a new one).

Capitalization is a part of modern English grammar. Failure to do so (capitalize) means that one isn’t properly using the English language… which seems to indicate that the person wasn’t properly educated about this… which I suppose could translate as “uncultured.”

Although capitalization doesn’t seem as vital to the English language as, say… subject-verb agreement, it’s still a component of our language anyway. If I wrote my posts like:
Well, I is not agreeing with you?
wouldn’t you assume that I was uncultured and/or stupid? Okay, maybe messing up simple subject/verb agreements is not the same as failing to capitalize certain letters… but, eh… nevermind. My point is that people should capitalize =P

it depends completely on the environment.
in a chat room or IM, not capitalizing sentences helps breed a sense of informality, and informality is vital to relaxation
in a term paper informality signals laziness.
