It is tough to do too much when you’re just in a place a few days, but sounds like you had a lovely trip and the waves will surely beckon your H back!
Any restaurant suggestions in the Hillcrest neighborhood or near Balboa Park, Bankers Hill area? We came to town for the Navy Notre Dame game yesterday. Tonight we are taking our teens to the Haunted Trail in Balboa Park so looking for something nearby, perhaps Italian b/c we’ve already had plenty of Mexican as well as pizza/burger/bar food the past few days. Something casual (dh and I will enjoy a nicer restaurant tomorrow after they fly home and we stay an extra night w/o them!).
For just yourselves, Uber over to Coasterra on Harbor Island. You’ll see the skyline, it’s very nice.
Too bad this wasn’t asked earlier;; would have suggested Cucina Urbana. For future reference.
Am bookmarking this thread as I’ll be in San Diego in March with our theatre company. A busy itinerary for a weekend but am thinking about extending the trip on one end of the weekend. It would be lovely to meet some of you, if we could arrange that.
@alwaysamom - would love to meet you in March! Weather can be cool then and may be rainy. Do you know where you will be staying?
@alwaysamom - Count me in too - always pleasant to meet CC’er’s. I did a get together the year we moved here and met 7 other area posters. It would be fun again. I would be happy to help coordinate nearer the date if you decide you can fit us in!
I visit one of my kids in San Diego for 7-10 days each year. Apart from gluten free pizza in North Park, one time at George’s followed by sorbet in La Jolla, we have never eaten out or gone to a bar or brewery. We buy groceries and eat at home to leave time for exploring the area.
I love Balboa Park- the gardens, the museums- and the walk there through Banker’s Hill. Little Italy. Coronado and its beach. Barrio Logan for arts/music. I did go to Pacific Beach once, and walked the beach. My kid does not have a car and knows the bus system, a great way to see the city. We even made it to Carlsbad (train).
In general, we walk A LOT.
The last time I was there it rained a lot and streets were flooded. The ocean views were non-existent in the fog. I still had a great time.
@Marilyn thanks for the Cucina Urbana recommendation. I had already looked at their menu prior your post but unfortunately my boys are not very adventurous eaters so it wouldn’t appeal to them. I’m saving it for another trip (we are in SD a couple times a year). We ended up going to Arrivederci in Hillcrest. It was fine, nothing to rave about but it was good. I actually liked Parma, which is around the corner, better - D and I went last time I was here but S19, who never eats salad decided recently he likes ceased salad and declared that he’d eaten too much junk on this trip and wanted to go somewhere he could get a ceaser salad, which ruled out Parma as well as Cucina Urbana.
The kids had an absolute blast at the Haunted Trail. I hadn’t planned to go inside with them bc dh didn’t want to but D, a college sophomore, felt sure her younger brothers would leave her behind so she forced me to go. It was fun but not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. D is planning to go back with her college friends.
Dh and I had a relaxing day strolling along the strand around Mission Bay then had drinks on the beach at one of his former hangouts when he lived in PB 25 years ago. Now I’m at the airport headed back to real life where the whole college application stress with S19 awaits me once again!
I’ve bookmarked this thread though for future reference as I’ll be back again in six months or so.
