looking for the word “mistress” in German.
To clarify, I do not mean woman, wife, lover, or even girlfriend. Seeking a specific word that refers to an extra lover a man might have in addition to his wife.
Think: John Edwards had a mistress.
Is there a single word?

Thank you
Danke!

I think “Geliebte” would work.

Either geliebte or matresse. Matresse leans more toward the ‘kept woman’ idea. Geliebte connotes lover or sweetheart.

2 very good ideas.
help on pronunciation?
the a in matresse
Is it a “long A” like in maybe?
short A as in hat?
is it “ahh” sound like in awkward?
Or more like the o in money? ( muh-nee)

Is it like: muh-tress-uh?
Or something else?

"Concerning Maitresse: In German the far more common spelling is M

Sorry, but all I can think of is “mattress”, which is, I think, appropriate! :)

^^ Haha - that’s what I was thinking.

I’m glad you got so many helpful responses. I speak German, but I’ve never had to use the word “mistress” so I had no idea what it was…

If you haven’t seen it yet, see if you can rent or somehow watch The Lives of Others. In German. Really terrific film.
