If there is any alumni or current student, please give your opinion on what type of student is more likely to succeed at Cornell, especially CAS.

Cornell is a big red machine. It offers a lot of opportunities, but you need to go after them. They do not coddle you. Unlike some small LAC, if you don’t show up for classes, your dean or professor is not going to check up on you. If you are not doing well in class, it’s up to you to seek help. You will more likely have more work than you have time for, so you’ll need to be very good with time management and not fall behind. You will also have more ECs (including parties) than you’ll time for. The ability to balance work/life balance is going to be important.

What type of student is more likely to succeed at Cornell? Smart, self starter, practical, someone who can raise up to challenges, with a can do attitude and not a whiner.

I love hiring Cornell grads for all of those qualities. At my last job, I hired 4 Cornellians and they are high performers at work.

I remember the opening convocation of my D’s freshman year. Every student speaker mentioned that everyone at Cornell at some point questions whether they can make it there & if it is too hard for them. This happened to my D in the fall semester of her soph. year, I reminded her of those speeches & suggested a number of learning opportunities that she had not taken advantage of. She worked through it & is in the process of interviewing for Phd programs. So IMHO, the type of student who succeeds are those who are willing to do more than they did in high school to get the grades they are accostomed to getting.

csdad - good luck to your daughter.
