Why 4.0 UW GPA is not the best GPA to have

I believe that a 4.0 UW GPA means that you either went to the really easy classes or all of the classes that you take have lenient grading. In my opinion, good GPA to have is one that says that you struggled through some classes but you overcame those challenges. This range would be between 3.7 and 4.0. Those who don’t believe this would probably say that the people are inherently smart but that’s a debate that has been going on for years. I want to get a debate going because this question is very popular in college admissions and I want to hear both sides of the argument.

All opinions are welcome and respected :).

Not all 4.0 UWs are made equal; one needs to look at the discrepancy between UW and W, which is IMO the best indicator of curricular rigor.

Then again, some colleges would rather have a class full of hoop-jumpers if it means they can achieve better success in the postgraduate placement game, be it grad school or on the job market.

At a lot of high schools this is true even for the most challenging classes offered.

Ha, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks of ‘hoop-jumper’ as a related concept to 4.0 UW GPAs. And yes, wisely pointed out that hoop-jumpers are who most colleges want because they’re the ones who will keep hoop-jumping and go on to bring glory to the university. True intellectuals, while fun for other intellectuals to be around, are more or less a random mixture when it comes to how successful they’re going to end up being.

YES! That is what I mean. True intellectuals are often the ones who don’t care much about the grades, but care about gaining more knowledge and sharing their passion.

It’s not a happier life or a more valuable one to be a true intellectual. Just different, and often misunderstood/conflated with success.

“I believe that a 4.0 UW GPA means that you either went to the really easy classes or all of the classes that you take have lenient grading.” So, not possible that you’re just a hardworking and really good student?

@mathyone I never said that. There are students like that and I applaud them but I’m talking about the people who take the shortcut in order to get a 4.0 UW.
