Why am I never invited to a wedding like this?

Actually, Indian weddings are the best in my experience. Imagine 3 days of events including participation as well as viewing dances, et al. I’ve been to celebrations with different budgets but all were much more elaborate than any church plus any other receptions I’ve known about. That song on the video didn’t grab me, not my ethnic group, I guess.

Fun video–but I was waiting for them to do the Cossack dance ;)

wis75, you say the song in the video wasn’t your ethnic group but you may not realize it but Lin-Manuel Miranda (the groom and a Tony winner) is Hispanic. I thought that made it even more special that they were performing L’Chaim!

I don’t want to hijack the thread, but the bridesmaids/groomswoman’s dresses were lovely, especially when they danced. Thinking of the thread about bridesmaids dresses made me notice them.

Yes, if you google the groom on Youtube, there is a great Tony acceptance speech by him with shoutouts to his future wife, family, and Puerto Rico.

“That song on the video didn’t grab me, not my ethnic group, I guess.”

wis–You’ve never seen/heard Fiddler on the Roof?!?

(Not my ethnic/religious group, either–unless you count the Cossacks.)

Surely you know “Sunrise, Sunset” ??

I have some friends who attended Lin and Vanessa’s wedding and it was as much fun in person as it seems on the video. The best part, in my opinion, was how joyful she looks while watching them perform. They are a wonderful young couple who are well-educated, talented, intelligent and extremely successful, not to mention over the moon happy with each other. Beautiful to see!

By the way, several of those who were singing were performer friends of the couple. :)

I agree, alwaysamom, the bride looked so genuinely happy with what was going on. It looked like the family, friends, were all very moved and thrilled. I am not Jewish but think the song choice was great! It is a classic song as others have noted with lots of meaning, regardless of your ethnic background. Wis,would love to go to an Indian wedding some day. That sounds like lots of fun!

In an interview years ago, the producer of “Fiddler” talked abot how the musical was a huge, huge hit in Japan. Why were Japanese theater goers so interested in a story about Ashkenazic Jews? People told the producer that it was because the theme of “Fiddler” was about tradition changing, and young people not following the traditions of their parents and grandparents but moving in their own ways.

That’s what I loved most about that video–the song worked just as well for a Puerto Rican family.

I wish I could steal this idea for the (at this stage) hypothetical weddings of my two daughters, but they’d just think it was derivative.

How many of you saw “Love, Actually”? There’s a great wedding gag in there. Yeah, it’s fictional, but it is so cool that it still gets credit.

S2 was involved in his school’s Fiddler on the Roof production a couple of years ago. Have to send this to him, as he will get a kick out of it.

What a wedding gift!

Verrrrry Cool!

And here’s the story of their romance, from the NY Times:

<a href=“Vows: Vanessa Nadal and Lin Miranda - The New York Times”>Vows: Vanessa Nadal and Lin Miranda - The New York Times;

They can thank Facebook for their romance…

I don’t know who the bride and groom are, but I loved the way the two families pulled this off. It just makes such a great statement of two families coming together.

Just saw Fiddler on the Roof in Philly this summer.
Thanks for posting this------made my morning!

Thanks for the link to the NYTimes “Vows” article, jonri! This being CC, I just want to add for people who might not have clicked on it that Lin Miranda went to Wesleyan and Vanessa Nadal to … MIT! Yet another demonstration of the fact that drop-dead gorgeous women do indeed go there (many CC posters’ kids among them).

I saw In the Heights this summer and it was a lot of fun. But I couldn’t really figure out what most of the lyrics were in the rap parts. There’s something about the rhythm of rap that makes it hard for me to put words together…but the dancing was FABULOUS!

Loved the video, thanks for posting the link. Passing it along to some friends who I know will enjoy it as much as I did.

Have y’all seen LMM’s Alexander Hamilton rap at the White House?
